# David Fuster

**David Fuster Torrijos** (born 3 February 1982) is a Spanish former professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as an [attacking midfielder](/source/Attacking_midfielder).

After starting out at [Villarreal B](/source/Villarreal_CF_B) – he also represented the [first team](/source/Villarreal_CF) in the [2009–10 season](/source/2009%E2%80%9310_La_Liga) – he went on to spend most of his 15-year career at [Olympiacos](/source/Olympiacos_F.C.), appearing in 169 competitive matches and winning nine major titles, including six consecutive [Super League Greece](/source/Super_League_Greece) championships.

## Club career

### Villarreal and Elche

Fuster was born in [Oliva](/source/Oliva), [Valencia](/source/Valencian_Community). Aged 22, he was signed from his hometown club by [Villarreal](/source/Villarreal_CF), but spent four years exclusively with [its reserves](/source/Villarreal_CF_B), helping to achieve promotion to [Segunda División B](/source/Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n_B) in [2007](/source/2006%E2%80%9307_Tercera_Divisi%C3%B3n).

In 2008, Fuster was sold to neighbours [Elche](/source/Elche_CF), with an option to rebuy afterwards. After a solid [2008–09 season](/source/2008%E2%80%9309_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n) in the [Segunda División](/source/Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n) – he was their topscorer at 13, tied for tenth in the league – he was rebought by Villarreal for [€](/source/Euro)500.000.[1] He was relatively played in his [debut campaign](/source/2009%E2%80%9310_La_Liga), scoring his first goal for the club in the 3–2 away defeat against [Sevilla](/source/Sevilla_FC) on 8 November 2009.[2] On 2 January 2010, he added another in the 1–1 draw at [La Liga](/source/La_Liga) and [UEFA Champions League](/source/UEFA_Champions_League) champions [Barcelona](/source/FC_Barcelona).[3]

### Olympiacos

In late August 2010, Fuster signed for [Olympiacos](/source/Olympiacos_F.C.) in Greece for €1.5 million, rejoining his former Villarreal acquaintances [Ariel Ibagaza](/source/Ariel_Ibagaza) and [Ernesto Valverde](/source/Ernesto_Valverde) (manager).[4] In his [first season](/source/2010%E2%80%9311_Super_League_Greece) he won the [Super League](/source/Super_League_Greece) and [reached the quarter-finals](/source/2010%E2%80%9311_Greek_Cup) of the [domestic cup](/source/Greek_Football_Cup), ranking third in the scoring charts and leading the team in minutes played.

Fuster scored his first goal in the Champions League on 28 September 2011, in a 2–1 away defeat against [Arsenal](/source/Arsenal_F.C.).[5] He also netted in the second game between the two sides (3–1 home win),[6] as the [Piraeus](/source/Piraeus) side [finished third in their group](/source/2011%E2%80%9312_UEFA_Champions_League), [being relegated](/source/2011%E2%80%9312_UEFA_Europa_League) to the [UEFA Europa League](/source/UEFA_Europa_League); in the latter competition, his second-half strike was the only of the away win over [Rubin Kazan](/source/FC_Rubin_Kazan) in the [round of 32](/source/Single-elimination_tournament) (eventually 2–0 on aggregate).[7] In the next round he repeated the feat against [Metalist Kharkiv](/source/FC_Metalist_Kharkiv),[8] who however won the second leg 2–1 in [Athens](/source/Athens) to progress, with the player featuring the 90 minutes.[9]

On 28 April 2012, in the 119th minute of [the final](/source/2012_Greek_Football_Cup_final) of the Greek Cup, Fuster scored from a [Vasilis Torosidis](/source/Vasilis_Torosidis) assist for the [2–1 winner](/source/2011%E2%80%9312_Greek_Cup) against [Atromitos](/source/Atromitos_F.C.) after coming on as a late [substitute](/source/Substitute_(association_football)).[10] During the [2012–13 campaign](/source/2012%E2%80%9313_Super_League_Greece), as [Leonardo Jardim](/source/Leonardo_Jardim) was at the helm of the team, he suffered a dip in form, also being injured for two months; when he returned, however, Jardim's replacement [Míchel](/source/M%C3%ADchel_(footballer,_born_1963)) showed confidence in his compatriot.[11][12]

Fuster scored his third and last goal in the season on 7 April 2013, contributing to a 4–0 away victory over [Platanias](/source/Platanias_F.C.)[13] as Olympiacos won their third national championship in a row. On 15 March of the following year he netted another, with his team downing [Panthrakikos](/source/Panthrakikos_F.C.) 2–0 at home and [renewing their domestic supremacy](/source/2013%E2%80%9314_Super_League_Greece).[14]

After a successful [2014–15](/source/2014%E2%80%9315_Super_League_Greece), ended with a [double](/source/Double_(association_football)), the 33-year-old Fuster extended his contract for a further two years.[15][16] His renewal was also a satisfaction for his former coach [Ernesto Valverde](/source/Ernesto_Valverde), who mentioned: "Fuster is a perfect player for the club because of the similarities in character. I am also proud for the club because I love it, and I want it to have the best players".[17]

On 2 September 2015, Fuster was left out of newly appointed manager [Marco Silva](/source/Marco_Silva)'s [Champions League](/source/2015%E2%80%9316_UEFA_Champions_League) squad.[18] He appeared rarely during [the season](/source/2015%E2%80%9316_Super_League_Greece) but, on 28 February 2016, helped with a brace to a 3–0 home win against [Veria](/source/Veria_F.C.) that confirmed the club's 43rd national championship.[19]

On 15 June 2016, Fuster announced on social media that his contract would not be renewed.[20]

### Getafe

Fuster signed a one-year deal with [Getafe](/source/Getafe_CF) in July 2016.[21] His only goal of [the season](/source/2016%E2%80%9317_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n) came on 17 June 2017 in the [promotion play-offs](/source/2017_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n_play-offs), when he came from the bench to help the hosts to defeat [Huesca](/source/SD_Huesca) 3–0 (5–2 on aggregate).[22]

On 25 June 2017, after achieving promotion to the top tier, Fuster announced his retirement aged 35.[23]
