# David Freeman Hawke

**David Freeman Hawke** (died 1999 at age 75) was an American historian. His book *Benjamin Rush: Revolutionary Gadfly* became a [National Book Award](/source/National_Book_Award) nominee in 1972. Hawke was born in [Philadelphia](/source/Philadelphia) and held degrees from [Swarthmore College](/source/Swarthmore_College), the [University of Wisconsin](/source/University_of_Wisconsin) and the [University of Pennsylvania](/source/University_of_Pennsylvania). He taught at [Pace College](/source/Pace_College) for 14 years before joining [Lehman College](/source/Lehman_College) in 1972. He retired in 1986.[1]
