Burris attended the [University of Edinburgh](/source/University_of_Edinburgh) but ultimately earned his bachelor's degree from [UNC–Chapel Hill](/source/University_of_North_Carolina_at_Chapel_Hill) and his master's degree from [Wake Forest University](/source/Wake_Forest_University). At UNC's student television station, Burris formed a sketch comedy troupe with filmmakers [Peyton Reed](/source/Peyton_Reed) and [John Schultz](/source/John_Schultz_(director)), among others. They produced a series called ''The World of Fun'' that was influenced by [''Monty Python's Flying Circus''](/source/Monty_Python's_Flying_Circus) and ''[Second City Television](/source/Second_City_Television).''
