# David Burrell

**David Bakewell Burrell** (March 1, 1933 – October 1, 2023) was an American educator, theologian, writer and translator who was a priest of the [Congregation of Holy Cross](/source/Congregation_of_Holy_Cross). He was the Theodore Hesburgh Professor emeritus in Philosophy and Theology at [University of Notre Dame](/source/University_of_Notre_Dame), US.[1]

He wrote around thirteen books on Judeo-Christian and Islamic religions. He knew several languages; he translated two books of [Al-Ghazali](/source/Al-Ghazali) from [Arabic](/source/Arabic_language) into English. He also taught comparative theology, ethics and development at Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi, Uganda; Tangaza College, [Nairobi](/source/Nairobi), [Kenya](/source/Kenya); and [Hebrew University](/source/Hebrew_University), [Jerusalem](/source/Jerusalem).[1][2] During 1960s, he was involved in [Anti-Vietnam War Movement](/source/Opposition_to_United_States_involvement_in_the_Vietnam_War).[2] He was also a professor at [Notre Dame University Bangladesh](/source/Notre_Dame_University_Bangladesh).[3] Burrell died in [Notre Dame, Indiana](/source/Notre_Dame,_Indiana) on October 1, 2023, at the age of 90.[4]
