# David Buchwald

**David Evan Buchwald** (born June 12, 1978) is an American politician and attorney who served as a member of the [New York State Assembly](/source/New_York_State_Assembly), representing the [93rd district](/source/New_York's_93rd_State_Assembly_district).[2]

## Early life and education

Buchwald was born on June 12, 1978, and grew up in [Larchmont](/source/Larchmont,_New_York) and [Mamaroneck, New York](/source/Mamaroneck,_New_York). His mother was judge [Naomi Reice Buchwald](/source/Naomi_Reice_Buchwald)[3] and his father was Don Buchwald.[4] Through his father, he is a direct descendant of [Baal Shem Tov](/source/Baal_Shem_Tov), the founder of [Hasidic Judaism](/source/Hasidic_Judaism).[5]

He attended [Yale University](/source/Yale_University), where he received a B.S. in physics. He later went on to receive a [Master of Public Policy](/source/Master_of_Public_Policy) from the [John F. Kennedy School of Government](/source/John_F._Kennedy_School_of_Government) and a J.D. from [Harvard Law School](/source/Harvard_Law_School).[6]

## Career

Before running for New York State Assembly, Buchwald worked at the law firm [Davis Polk](/source/Davis_Polk). He also interned for Congresswoman [Nita Lowey](/source/Nita_Lowey).[6]

Buchwald was first elected on November 6, 2012, when he defeated the incumbent office holder. He ran for Congress in 2020 to replace retiring incumbent [Nita Lowey](/source/Nita_Lowey),[7] and lost to attorney [Mondaire Jones](/source/Mondaire_Jones).[8]

## Personal life

Buchwald married Lara M. Samet on March 1, 2014. Their wedding was officiated by Rabbi [Alan Silverstein](/source/Alan_Silverstein).[4]
