==Life and career==
Anthony David Brighty was educated at Northgate Grammar School (now [Northgate High School (Ipswich)](/source/Northgate_High_School_(Ipswich))) and [Clare College, Cambridge](/source/Clare_College%2C_Cambridge). He joined the [Foreign Office](/source/Foreign_Office) in 1961, served in [Brussels](/source/Brussels) and [Havana](/source/Havana), then in 1969 resigned and spent two years working for [S. G. Warburg & Co.](/source/S._G._Warburg_%26_Co.) He rejoined the Foreign Office in 1971 and served at [Saigon](/source/Saigon) and at the UK mission to the [United Nations](/source/United_Nations) in New York City, then attended the [Royal College of Defence Studies](/source/Royal_College_of_Defence_Studies) in 1979. He was head of the Personnel Operations Department at the [Foreign and Commonwealth Office](/source/Foreign_and_Commonwealth_Office) 1980–83, [Counsellor](/source/Diplomatic_rank) at [Lisbon](/source/Lisbon) 1983–86, and Director of the Cabinet of the [Secretary General of NATO](/source/Secretary_General_of_NATO) ([Lord Carrington](/source/Peter_Carington%2C_6th_Baron_Carrington)) 1986–87.

After retiring from the Diplomatic Service, Brighty was a non-executive director of [EFG Private Bank](/source/EFG_Private_Bank) and of [Henderson](/source/Henderson_Group) EuroMicro Investment Trust.
