He was chief of the emergency room and trauma services of Jerusalem’s [Shaare Zedek Medical Center](/source/Shaare_Zedek_Medical_Center). Applebaum was murdered in a [Palestinian](/source/Palestinian_political_violence) [suicide bombing](/source/suicide_bombing) at [Cafe Hillel](/source/Cafe_Hillel) in [Jerusalem](/source/Jerusalem) on September 9, 2003.

==Biography==
David Applebaum was born in Detroit, Michigan. He attended high school at the [Hebrew Theological College](/source/Hebrew_Theological_College) in Skokie, Illinois and received his rabbinical ordination from Rabbi [Aaron Soloveitchik](/source/Aaron_Soloveitchik) at the [Brisk yeshiva](/source/Brisk_yeshiva) in Chicago. Applebaum was a graduate of [Roosevelt University](/source/Roosevelt_University) in Chicago, with a master's degree in biological sciences from [Northwestern University](/source/Northwestern_University). He earned his medical degree at the [Medical College of Ohio](/source/University_of_Toledo_Medical_Center) in Toledo, Ohio in 1978.<ref name="query.nytimes.com">{{Cite web|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/11/world/a-healer-of-terror-victims-becomes-one.html|title=A Healer of Terror Victims Becomes One|first=Greg|last=Myre|date=September 11, 2003|via=NYTimes.com}}</ref><ref name="The Lancet 2003">"The Lancet," Volume 362, Issue 9389, 27 September 2003, Page 1083</ref> He [immigrated to Israel](/source/aliyah) with his family in 1982.

Applebaum was killed along with his 20-year-old daughter, [Nava Applebaum](/source/Nava_Applebaum), on the eve of her wedding.<ref name="query.nytimes.com" /><ref>[http://www.altawasul.net/MFA/Terrorism-%20Obstacle%20to%20Peace/Memorial/2003/Dr%20David%20Appelbaum Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Dr. David Appelbaum, 9 Sep 2003] {{Webarchive|url=https://archive.today/20120720082639/http://www.altawasul.net/MFA/Terrorism-%20Obstacle%20to%20Peace/Memorial/2003/Dr%20David%20Appelbaum |date=20 July 2012 }} <!-- Bot generated title -->]</ref> Applebaum had just returned from New York, where he addressed a symposium on terrorism marking the second anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States. He ended his remarks with: "From one moment to the next, we never know what will happen in the ER [emergency room], but it's in Jerusalem that real reality occurs."<ref name="Cafe Hillel" />

Applebaum's murder was described by ''[The Lancet](/source/The_Lancet)'' as a tragic irony: This victim of a suicide bomber was himself an "emergency room doctor who treated victims of dozens of suicide bombings in Israel."<ref name="The Lancet 2003" /> In an incident in 1984, Applebaum rushed to aid a man shot in a clothing shop, operating on him while the shooting continued.<ref name="query.nytimes.com" /> In 1986, the Israeli [Knesset](/source/Knesset) presented Applebaum with the Quality of Life Award for treating terror victims on King George Street in Jerusalem while bullets flew around him.<ref name="The Lancet 2003" />

Applebaum’s younger daughter, Shira, earned her paramedic degree from [Ben-Gurion University](/source/Ben-Gurion_University)'s Health Sciences Faculty and works in emergency medicine.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.jpost.com/israel/dr-david-applebaums-daughter-starts-medical-career|title=Dr. David Applebaum's daughter starts medical career|date=November 23, 2006|website=The Jerusalem Post | JPost.com}}</ref>

==Medical career==
Applebaum pioneered the idea of immediate care clinics in Israel, to divert non-emergency cases from hospital emergency rooms while delivering faster care to patients who would have had long waits for emergency room staff.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://fr.jpost.com/Tags/satellite|title=Satellite News and latest stories | The Jerusalem Post|website=fr.jpost.com}}</ref>

The ''[British Medical Journal](/source/British_Medical_Journal)'' noted that Applebaum trained both [Arab](/source/Arab) and Jewish physicians and nurses for his system of urgent care centers so that there would be staffing on the holy days of both religions.<ref>British Medical Journal 2003 September 20; 327(7416): 684.</ref> He was credited by [The Lancet](/source/The_Lancet) with "transforming" the delivery of emergency care in Israel.<ref name="The Lancet 2003" /> Jonathan Halevy, Director General of Jerusalem's Shaare Zedek Medical Center, called Applebaum "a master of emergency medicine." He said that Applebaum had spent the last year upgrading the center’s emergency room procedures, and previously had set up a chain of small emergency care centers called Terem throughout Jerusalem.<ref name="Cafe Hillel">{{Cite web|url=http://www.hagshama.org.il/en/resources/view.asp?id=1511|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20071010201543/http://www.hagshama.org.il/en/resources/view.asp?id=1511|url-status=dead|title=Cafe Hillel<!-- Bot generated title -->|archivedate=October 10, 2007}}</ref>
