'''David Roy Affleck''' (26 July 1912 – 11 August 1984) was a Scottish professional [footballer](/source/association_football) who played as a [centre-half](/source/Midfielder_(football)) for [Clapton Orient](/source/Clapton_Orient_F.C.) and [Southampton](/source/Southampton_F.C.) in the 1930s.

==Playing career==
Affleck was born in [Coylton](/source/Coylton), [Ayrshire](/source/Ayrshire), on 26 July 1912 and played Scottish junior football with Crosshouse Castle Rovers.<ref name="Kaufman02">{{cite book |last1=Kaufman |first1=Neilson N |last2=Ravenhill |first2=Alan E |title=The Men Who Made Leyton Orient Football Club |date=2002 |publisher=Tempus Publishing |isbn=0752424122 |page=10}}</ref> He joined [Notts County](/source/Notts_County_F.C.) in July 1932 but made no first team appearances before moving on to [Bristol City](/source/Bristol_City_F.C.) in May 1934. After a season with City he joined [Clapton Orient](/source/Clapton_Orient_F.C.) in July 1935, where he spent two seasons in the [Third Division South](/source/Football_League_Third_Division_South).<ref name="Kaufman02" />

Financial difficulties at Orient led to Affleck being sold to [Southampton](/source/Southampton_F.C.) in May 1937,<ref name="Kaufman02" /> where he was recruited by [Tom Parker](/source/Tom_Parker_(footballer%2C_born_1897)) as part of his drive to strengthen the team in an attempt to gain promotion from [the Second Division](/source/Football_League_Second_Division), along with [Frank Hill](/source/Frank_Hill) (from [Blackpool](/source/Blackpool_F.C.)), [Billy Bevis](/source/Billy_Bevis) (from [Portsmouth](/source/Portsmouth_F.C.)) and [Ray Parkin](/source/Ray_Parkin_(footballer)) (from [Middlesbrough](/source/Middlesbrough_F.C.)).

After two seasons at [The Dell](/source/The_Dell_(Southampton_F.C.)), "his heading ability, coupled with some incisive tackling, reportedly attracted the attention of top London clubs, [Tottenham Hotspur](/source/Tottenham_Hotspur_F.C.) and [Chelsea](/source/Chelsea_F.C.)"<ref name= ABC>{{cite book | first1=Duncan |last1=Holley |first2=Gary |last2=Chalk | title=The Alphabet of the Saints| publisher= ACL & Polar Publishing | year=1992|pages=10 |isbn=0-9514862-3-3}}</ref> but, unfortunately, [the war](/source/World_War_II) interrupted his career and prevented a move to a bigger club. Affleck joined the [Southampton](/source/Southampton) police reservists and, during the war, turned out for the Southampton Police XI as well as making sporadic appearances for The Saints in wartime matches.

When hostilities were over, he was 33 years old and joined non-league [Yeovil Town](/source/Yeovil_Town_F.C.). He was now a full-time policeman and remained in [Somerset](/source/Somerset) for the rest of his life. Affleck died on 11 August 1984.<ref name="Kaufman02" />
