# Date (metadata)

In [metadata](/source/Metadata), the term ***date***[1] is a [representation term](/source/Representation_term) used to specify a [calendar date](/source/Calendar_date) in the [Gregorian calendar](/source/Gregorian_calendar). Many data representation standards such as [XML](/source/XML), [XML Schema](/source/XML_Schema_(W3C)), [Web Ontology Language](/source/Web_Ontology_Language) specify that ISO date format [ISO 8601](/source/ISO_8601) should be used.

Note that Date should not be confused with the **DateAndTime** representation term which requires that both the date and time to be supplied.
