**Dashiv** ([Ukrainian](/source/Ukrainian_language): Дашів; [Polish](/source/Polish_language): *Daszów*[1]) is a [rural settlement](/source/Populated_places_in_Ukraine#Rural_settlements) in [Haisyn Raion](/source/Haisyn_Raion) of [Vinnytsia Oblast](/source/Vinnytsia_Oblast) in [Ukraine](/source/Ukraine). It is located on the banks of the [Sob](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sob_(Southern_Bug)&action=edit&redlink=1), a left tributary of the [Southern Bug](/source/Southern_Bug). Dashiv hosts the administration of [Dashiv settlement hromada](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dashiv_settlement_hromada&action=edit&redlink=1), one of the [hromadas](/source/Hromada) of Ukraine.[2] Population: 3,762 (2022 estimate)[3] It is located in the historic region of [Podolia](/source/Podolia).

## History

Potocki Palace

Daszów, as it was known in Polish, was a [private town](/source/Private_town), administratively located in the Winnica County in the [Bracław Voivodeship](/source/Brac%C5%82aw_Voivodeship) in the [Lesser Poland Province](/source/Lesser_Poland_Province%2C_Crown_of_the_Kingdom_of_Poland) of the Kingdom of Poland.[1] In 1585, the town was purchased by the [Zbaraski](/source/Zbaraski) family.[4] In the 1630s, it passed to the [Wiśniowiecki](/source/Wi%C5%9Bniowiecki) family, and in 1641 [Konstanty Wiśniowiecki](/source/Konstanty_Wi%C5%9Bniowiecki) pawned it to Stefan Czetwertyński-Światopełk.[4]

In 1648 a battle between [Cossacks](/source/Zaporozhian_Cossacks) of [Maksym Kryvonis](/source/Maksym_Kryvonis) and Polish troops of [Jeremi Wiśniowiecki](/source/Jeremi_Wi%C5%9Bniowiecki) took place in the vicinity.[5] In 1672 Dashiv passed to the [Ottoman Empire](/source/Ottoman_Empire), and in 1699 returned to Poland. In 1737 it was the site of a skirmish between [haydamaks](/source/Haydamak) and Polish [dragoons](/source/Dragoon).[4] In the mid-18th century, Daszów passed to the [Plater family](/source/Plater_family). The town was attacked by the haydamaks during the [Koliivshchyna](/source/Koliivshchyna) in 1768, however, local nobility managed to flee and find shelter in the nearby village of Kopijówka.[4]

The town was annexed by the [Russian Empire](/source/Russian_Empire) in the [Second Partition of Poland](/source/Second_Partition_of_Poland) in 1793. A battle of the [November Uprising](/source/November_Uprising) between Polish insurgents and Russian troops was fought near the town on 14 May 1831. Explorer, poet and orientalist [Wacław Seweryn Rzewuski](/source/Wac%C5%82aw_Seweryn_Rzewuski) went [missing in action](/source/Missing_in_action) during the battle. In October 1919 Dashiv was the site of a battle between the forces of [Ukrainian Galician Army](/source/Ukrainian_Galician_Army) and [Ukrainian People's Army](/source/Ukrainian_People's_Army) on one side and [Volunteer Army](/source/Volunteer_Army) on the other.[5]

During [World War II](/source/World_War_II), the town was captured by German forces on 25 July 1941. In 1941, the Germans established a [Judenrat](/source/Judenrat) and two [open ghettos](/source/Jewish_ghettos_established_by_Nazi_Germany) in the town.[6] The ghettos were liquidated in October–December 1941, with 1,016 Jews massacred in four mass executions by the German forces and [Ukrainian Auxiliary Police](/source/Ukrainian_Auxiliary_Police).[6]

Until 18 July 2020, Dashiv belonged to [Illintsi Raion](/source/Illintsi_Raion). The raion was abolished in July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of [raions](/source/Raion) of Vinnytsia Oblast to six. The area of Illintsi Raion was split between Haisyn and [Vinnytsia Raions](/source/Vinnytsia_Raion), with Dashiv being transferred to Haisyn Raion.[7][8]

Until 26 January 2024, Dashiv was designated [urban-type settlement](/source/Urban-type_settlement). On this day, a new law entered into force which abolished this status, and Dashiv became a rural settlement.[9]

## Economy

### Transportation

The closest railway stations are in [Haisyn](/source/Haisyn) and in [Kryshtopivka](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kryshtopivka&action=edit&redlink=1), both on the railway line connecting [Vinnytsia](/source/Vinnytsia) with [Khrystynivka](/source/Khrystynivka) and [Vapniarka](/source/Vapniarka). There is infrequent passenger traffic.

The settlement is connected by road to Haisyn and Vinnytsia, where it has access to [Highway M30](/source/Highway_M30_(Ukraine)) connecting [Stryi](/source/Stryi) and [Dnipro](/source/Dnipro).
