==Early life and career==
Reid was born in [Winnipeg](/source/Winnipeg), [Manitoba](/source/Manitoba), to a family that was politically active with the [Cooperative Commonwealth Federation](/source/Cooperative_Commonwealth_Federation) and [New Democratic Party](/source/New_Democratic_Party_of_Manitoba). He began working for [Canadian National](/source/Canadian_National) in 1969 and became active in the trade union movement, serving as a shop steward and executive board member for the [International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers](/source/International_Brotherhood_of_Electrical_Workers). From 1986 to 1990, he was the national president of his railway employees' association.<ref name="ndpcaucus.mb.ca">[http://www.ndpcaucus.mb.ca/newCaucus/mlaPopUp.php?constituency=Transcona&french=0&content=biography&pageNumber= MLA for Transcona: Daryl Reid, New Democratic Party Caucus of Manitoba]{{dead link|date=September 2017 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}, accessed 27 September 2007.</ref>

==Member of the Legislative Assembly==

Reid was elected to the Manitoba legislature in the [1990 provincial election](/source/1990_Manitoba_general_election), defeating [Liberal](/source/Manitoba_Liberal_Party) incumbent [Richard Kozak](/source/Richard_Kozak). The [Progressive Conservative Party](/source/Progressive_Conservative_Party_of_Manitoba) won a [majority government](/source/majority_government) in this election, and Reid served as his party's critic for Transportation and the [Workers' Compensation Board](/source/Workers_Compensation_Board_of_Manitoba).<ref>In 1991, he criticized [CP Rail](/source/Canadian_Pacific) for shipping [Saskatchewan](/source/Saskatchewan) potash through the United States instead of Manitoba. See "CP Rail criticized", ''Globe and Mail'', 29 May 1991, B2.</ref> In the latter capacity, he called for the WCB to adopt universal coverage.<ref>Myron Love and Angela Stelmakowich, "Man should adopt universal coverage, provide pensions for chronic pain: NDP", ''Canadian Occupational Health & Safety News'', Vol. 16, No. 37.</ref> He later spoke against a proposed merger of Canadian National and [Canadian Pacific](/source/Canadian_Pacific), and strongly opposed the federal government's decision to privatize Canadian National.<ref>Dan Lett, "Privatize CN Rail, feds told", ''Winnipeg Free Press'', 20 January 1995.</ref>

Reid was re-elected without difficulty in the [1995 election](/source/1995_Manitoba_general_election), winning every poll in the Transcona division.<ref>"City says no to Grits", ''Winnipeg Free Press'', 26 April 1995.</ref> The Progressive Conservatives were re-elected to another majority government, and Reid served as his party's critic for Transportation and Labour.<ref>Kevin Rollason, "Residents draw line in snow", ''Winnipeg Free Press'', 8 December 1995, A4; Paul Samyn, "Manitoba's share of CP pact hiked", ''Winnipeg Free Press'', 5 January 1996, B5; "Boeing strikers demand inquiry", ''Globe and Mail'', 13 July 1996, N4.</ref>

After eleven years in opposition, the New Democratic Party was returned to government in the [1999 provincial election](/source/1999_Manitoba_general_election). Reid was easily re-elected in Transcona, and became a backbench supporter of [Gary Doer](/source/Gary_Doer)'s administration. He led a task force into Manitoba's system of issuing driver's licenses, and chaired a series of public meetings into the status of the province's roads, rails and runways.<ref>Douglas Nairne, "New drivers put to test: licensing to get tougher", ''Winnipeg Free Press'', 9 June 2000, A7; David Kuxhaus, "New drivers facing tougher license process", ''Winnipeg Free Press'', 30 June 2000, A6; Kevin Prokosh, "Public meetings to look at transportation", ''Winnipeg Free Press'', 8 June 2001, A4.</ref> Re-elected again in [2003](/source/2003_Manitoba_general_election), he chaired the committees that selected a new [ombudsman](/source/ombudsman) and a new [auditor general](/source/Auditor_General_of_Manitoba) for Manitoba.<ref>Paul Egan, "MLAs settle on candidate for ombudsman's job", ''Winnipeg Free Press'', 22 February 2005, B7; Martin Cash, "Bellringer returns to auditor general's position", ''Winnipeg Free Press'', 6 July 2006, A3.</ref>

In 2005, Reid and fellow NDP MLA [Bidhu Jha](/source/Bidhu_Jha) broke ranks with the Doer government and spoke against plans to create a new hog processing plant in their section of Winnipeg. After extensive criticism, the government withdrew its support for the project in 2007.<ref>Mary Agnes Welch, "NDP MLAs break ranks, demand hog-plant delay", ''Winnipeg Free Press'', 23 November 2005, A1.</ref>

Reid was returned for a fifth time in the [2007 election](/source/2007_Manitoba_general_election), in which the NDP were re-elected to a third consecutive majority government. He now chairs the 2020 Manitoba Transportation Task Force, and serves on the board of directors of the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation.<ref name="ndpcaucus.mb.ca"/>

==Federal politics==

Reid supported [Lorne Nystrom](/source/Lorne_Nystrom)'s bid to lead the federal [New Democratic Party](/source/New_Democratic_Party_of_Canada) in 1995. In 2003, he endorsed [Bill Blaikie](/source/Bill_Blaikie).<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www1.billblaikie.ca/ndp.php/leadershipsupporters/ctoctocsupport |title=Cross Canada Support for Bill |work=Bill Blaikie, Elmwood—Transcona |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070401195027/http://www1.billblaikie.ca/ndp.php/leadershipsupporters/ctoctocsupport |archive-date=April 1, 2007 |access-date=December 12, 2011}}</ref>
