Many of Coffield's paintings deal with cultural and political historical references. He references early Romantic artists such as [Henry Fuseli](/source/Henry_Fuseli) and [William Blake](/source/William_Blake).

''The Triumph of David'' (1996), for example, combined a [Nicolas Poussin](/source/Nicolas_Poussin) painting with an image of the marriage of [Prince Charles](/source/Prince_Charles) and [Lady Diana Spencer](/source/Diana%2C_Princess_of_Wales) to create a new image.

In the ''Paradox Portraits'' series, Coffield inverts well known faces, in "an exploration of celebrity, identity and perception".<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22026800|title=In pictures: Topsy turvy world of celebrity|work=[BBC News](/source/BBC_News)|date=5 April 2013}}</ref><ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/news/from-kates-smiling-eyebrows-to-harry-styles-staring-chin-the-topsy-turvy-faces-of-celebrity-8560453.html#gallery|title=From Kate's smiling eyebrows to Harry Styles' staring chin: The topsy turvy faces of celebrity|date=13 April 2013|work=The Independent|location=London|author=Mathilda Battersby}}</ref>
