# Darran Rowbotham

**Darran Rowbotham** (born 22 October 1966) is a Welsh former [footballer](/source/Association_football) who made more than 450 appearances in the [Football League](/source/English_Football_League) playing as a [striker](/source/Striker_(association_football)).

## Career

Rowbotham was born in [Cardiff](/source/Cardiff), Wales. He began his career as a junior with [Plymouth Argyle](/source/Plymouth_Argyle_F.C.), and turned professional with the club in November 1984. Three years later he joined local rivals [Exeter City](/source/Exeter_City_F.C.).[1] A key player in Exeter winning the [Fourth Division](/source/Football_League_Fourth_Division) title in the [1989–90 season](/source/1989%E2%80%9390_Football_League), his goalscoring had linked him with possible moves to top-flight football. However, he sustained a serious knee injury which kept him out of football for a year, after which his career was restricted to the lower divisions of the Football League.[2]

After four years at Exeter, where he scored 58 goals in 142 games in all competitions, he joined [Torquay United](/source/Torquay_United_F.C.) for a fee of £25,000. Only four months later he moved on again, following his former Exeter manager [Terry Cooper](/source/Terry_Cooper_(footballer,_born_1944)) to [Birmingham City](/source/Birmingham_City_F.C.) for a fee of £20,000.[1]

Lack of goals for Birmingham resulted in loan spells at [Mansfield Town](/source/Mansfield_Town_F.C.) and [Hereford United](/source/Hereford_United_F.C.) before he left on a [free transfer](/source/Free_transfer_(football)), signing for [Crewe Alexandra](/source/Crewe_Alexandra_F.C.) before the [1993–94 season](/source/1993%E2%80%9394_Football_League).[1] He spent two years there, followed by an 18-month spell at [Shrewsbury Town](/source/Shrewsbury_Town_F.C.), before returning to Exeter in 1996. He remained at Exeter for four years, including a month on loan to [Leyton Orient](/source/Leyton_Orient_F.C.),[3] before being released at the end of the [1999–2000 season](/source/1999%E2%80%932000_Football_League).[2] He ended his career playing alongside brother [Jason](/source/Jason_Rowbotham) for [Weymouth](/source/Weymouth_F.C.) in the [Southern League](/source/Southern_Football_League_Premier_Division).[4]
