**Darnley Bay** is a large inlet in the [Northwest Territories](/source/Northwest_Territories), Canada. It is a southern arm of the [Amundsen Gulf](/source/Amundsen_Gulf). The bay measures 45 km (28 mi) long, and 32 km (20 mi) wide at its mouth.[2]

The [Parry Peninsula](/source/Parry_Peninsula) is to the west and Halcro Point is to the east. The [Canadian Shield](/source/Canadian_Shield) originates east of Darnley Bay, the terrain sloping upwards, and characterized by glacial deposits.[3]

The bay was named by [John Richardson](/source/John_Richardson_(naturalist)), while travelling with [John Franklin](/source/John_Franklin) during the Second Overland Expedition, for [John Bligh, 4th Earl of Darnley](/source/John_Bligh%2C_4th_Earl_of_Darnley).[4]

In 1915, the [Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913-16](/source/Canadian_Arctic_Expedition_1913%E2%80%9316) was the first to delineate the southern shore of Darnley Bay.[5] The [Hornaday River](/source/Hornaday_River) drains into the bay's southern shores, 14 km (8.7 mi) east of the [Inuvialuit](/source/Inuvialuit) [hamlet](/source/Hamlet_(place)) of [Paulatuk](/source/Paulatuk).[6]
