Nearby localities include [al-Janudiyah](/source/al-Janudiyah), [Zarzur](/source/Zarzur) and [al-Najiyah](/source/al-Najiyah) to the southwest, [Jisr al-Shughur](/source/Jisr_al-Shughur) to the south and [Millis](/source/Millis%2C_Syria) and [Maarrat Misrin](/source/Maarrat_Misrin) to the east. ==History==
An inscription at the town, dating back to [Roman times](/source/Roman_Syria), attests to the existence of a [shipwright](/source/shipwright) in the town, building river-going boats to use on the Orontes.<ref>Butcher, 2004, p. 133.</ref> The town also has the remains of an ancient bridge.<ref name=Boulanger/> The [Christianization](/source/Christianization) of the city probably happened after 322.<ref>Trombley, 2001, p. 279.</ref>

During the [Crusades](/source/Crusades), the town was the property of the [Principality of Antioch](/source/Principality_of_Antioch)<ref name=Boulanger/> until it was captured by [Saladin](/source/Saladin) in 1188. Crusaders under [Bohemond VI of Antioch](/source/Bohemond_VI_of_Antioch) and [Tripoli](/source/Tripoli%2C_Lebanon) recaptured the town in 1260.<ref>Molin, 2003, p. 68.</ref> The Mamluk Sultan [Baibars](/source/Baibars) gained control in 1267. Nothing remains of the town's Crusader citadel, as it was quarried for building stones.<ref name=Boulanger>Boulanger, ed., 1966, p. 477.</ref> Darkush was visited by Syrian geographer [Yaqut al-Hamawi](/source/Yaqut_al-Hamawi) in the 1220s, during [Ayyubid](/source/Ayyubid_dynasty) rule. In the early 1960s it was described a large village of 2,500 residents and "one of the most picturesque" places in the area by geographer and author Robert Boulanger.<ref name="Boulanger476"/>
