'''Darara''' (11 May 1983 – June 2012) was an Irish-bred, French-trained [Thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) [racehorse](/source/horse_racing) and [broodmare](/source/broodmare). Her racing career was restricted to six races between June and November 1983 and included three wins including the [Prix Vermeille](/source/Prix_Vermeille) and [Prix de Psyché](/source/Prix_de_Psych%C3%A9). She went on to finish sixth behind [Dancing Brave](/source/Dancing_Brave) in France's most important race, the [Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe](/source/Prix_de_l'Arc_de_Triomphe) and was one of the highest-rated fillies of her generation in Europe. She was then retired to stud and became a highly successful producer of winners.

==Background==
Darara was a small, lightly built bay mare with a faint white [star](/source/star_(horse_marking)) and a white [sock](/source/sock_(horse_marking)) on her left hind leg bred in Ireland by her owner the [Aga Khan IV](/source/Aga_Khan_IV). Her sire Top Ville was also an Irish-bred, French-trained horse which won the [Prix du Jockey Club](/source/Prix_du_Jockey_Club) in 1979. At stud he also sired [Toulon](/source/Toulon_(horse)), winner of the [St Leger Stakes](/source/St_Leger_Stakes), Pistolet Bleu ([Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud](/source/Grand_Prix_de_Saint-Cloud)), [Saint Estephe](/source/Saint_Estephe_(horse)) ([Coronation Cup](/source/Coronation_Cup)) and [Shardari](/source/Shardari).<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.agakhanstuds.com/history/hors.asp?hcode=197600030 |title=Top Ville |publisher=Aga Khan Studs |date= |accessdate=2013-08-10 |archive-date=19 November 2010 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101119132117/http://agakhanstuds.com/history/hors.asp?hcode=197600030 |url-status=dead }}</ref> Her dam Delsy also produced [Darshaan](/source/Darshaan), who won the 1984 [Prix du Jockey Club](/source/Prix_du_Jockey_Club) and went on to become a leading sire.<ref name="bloodlines1">{{cite web |url=http://www.bloodlines.net/TB/Families/Family13c.htm |title=Thoroughbred Bloodlines – Stray Shot – Family 13-c |publisher=Bloodlines.net |date= |accessdate=2013-08-18 |archive-date=3 March 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160303211959/http://www.bloodlines.net/TB/Families/Family13c.htm |url-status=dead }}</ref> The filly was sent into training with [Alain de Royer-Dupré](/source/Alain_de_Royer-Dupr%C3%A9) at [Chantilly](/source/Chantilly_Racecourse) and usually raced in a [sheepskin noseband](/source/Shadow_roll).<ref name="Timeform1986">{{cite book | author=Timeform staff| title = Racehorses of 1986| publisher=Timeform | year = 1987| isbn = 0-900599-44-8}}</ref>

==Racing career==
Darara's small size and delicate constitution made her difficult to train and she did not appear on a racecourse until June 1986, when she won the Prix Albaraelle,<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.agakhanstuds.com/history/hors.asp?hcode=198300090 |title=DARARA |publisher=Aga Khan Studs |date= |accessdate=2013-08-19}}</ref> a [maiden race](/source/maiden_race) over 2000 [metres](/source/metres) at [Saint-Cloud Racecourse](/source/Saint-Cloud_Racecourse). She then finished second in a Listed race at [Evry Racecourse](/source/Evry_Racecourse) before being moved up in class to contest the [Group Three](/source/Group_races) [Prix de Psyché](/source/Prix_de_Psych%C3%A9) at [Deauville](/source/Deauville_Racecourse) in August. Ridden by [Yves Saint-Martin](/source/Yves_Saint-Martin), she won by one and a half [lengths](/source/Horse_length) from the British-trained Cocotte.<ref name="Timeform1986"/>

In September, Darara was moved up to Group One class for the Prix Vermeille over 2400 metres at [Longchamp Racecourse](/source/Longchamp_Racecourse). The [Prix de Diane](/source/Prix_de_Diane) winner Lacovia was made the odds-on favourite, with Darara third in the betting on 3.8/1. Saint-Martin sent the filly into the lead in the straight and she accelerated clear of her seven opponents to win easily by five lengths from Reloy. Following his filly's success, the Aga Khan opted to pay a 250,000 supplementary fee to enter the filly in the [Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe](/source/Prix_de_l'Arc_de_Triomphe).<ref name="Timeform1986"/> The Aga Khan's four-horse entry for the race on 5 October, comprising Darara, [Shardari](/source/Shardari), [Shahrastani](/source/Shahrastani_(horse)) and the pacemaker Dihistan, started at combined odds of 9/2 in an exceptionally strong field which included [Dancing Brave](/source/Dancing_Brave), [Bering](/source/Bering_(horse)), [Acatenango](/source/Acatenango_(horse)) and [Triptych](/source/Triptych_(horse)).<ref name="thefreelibrary1">{{cite web |url=http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Dar+Re+Mi+looks+top+of+the+scale%3B+Curragh+Group+1+winner+could+prove...-a0202732620 |title=Dar Re Mi looks top of the scale; Curragh Group 1 winner could prove big hit as broodmare |work=Racing Post |date=2 July 2009 |accessdate=2013-08-19 |archive-date=5 March 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160305085048/http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Dar+Re+Mi+looks+top+of+the+scale;+Curragh+Group+1+winner+could+prove...-a0202732620 |url-status=dead }}</ref> Darara was among the leaders in the straight, but weakened in the closing stages to finish sixth of the fifteen runners, four lengths behind the winner Dancing Brave. On her final appearance, Darara was sent to California to contest the [Breeders' Cup Turf](/source/Breeders'_Cup_Turf) at [Santa Anita Park](/source/Santa_Anita_Park) on 1 November. She was never is serious contention<ref name="thefreelibrary1"/> and finished eighth of the nine runners behind [Manila](/source/Manila_(horse)).<ref name="Timeform1986"/>

==Assessment==
In 1986, the independent Timeform organisation awarded Darara a rating of 129, placing her alongside the one-mile specialist [Sonic Lady](/source/Sonic_Lady) as the best three-year-old filly in Europe. In the International Classification, it rated her the best three-year-old filly over 11 furlongs plus with a rating of 126.

==Stud record==
Darara was retired from racing to become a broodmare at her owners stud. In 1994 Darara was offered for sale and bought for 470,000 [Irish guineas](/source/guinea_(coin)) on behalf of [Lord and Lady Lloyd Webber](/source/Andrew_Lloyd_Webber) and was moved to the Watership Down Stud in [Berkshire](/source/Berkshire).<ref name="racingpost1">{{cite web |author=Tom Pennington |work=[Racing Post](/source/Racing_Post) |url=http://bloodstock.racingpost.com/news/bloodstock/darara-dam-of-four-group-1-winners-dies/1051507/ |title=Darara dam of four Group 1 winners dies |date=12 June 2012 |accessdate=2013-08-19 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160203131905/http://bloodstock.racingpost.com/news/bloodstock/darara-dam-of-four-group-1-winners-dies/1051507/ |archive-date=3 February 2016 |url-status=dead }}</ref> Darara failed to produce a foal for several years after moving to Berkshire but recovered her fertility after a pioneering procedure involving the "flushing" of her [fallopian tubes](/source/fallopian_tubes).<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.ownerbreeder.co.uk/2012/06/darara-dies-at-29/ |title=Darara dies at 29 |publisher=Thoroughbred Owner & Breeder Magazine |date=12 June 2012 |accessdate=2013-08-19 |archive-date=6 November 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151106022157/http://www.ownerbreeder.co.uk/2012/06/darara-dies-at-29/ |url-status=dead }}</ref>
