'''Daniel James Sonner''' (born 9 January 1972) is an English-born former [Northern Ireland](/source/Northern_Ireland_national_football_team) international [footballer](/source/Association_football). He won 13 [cap](/source/Cap_(sport))s in a seven-year international career.

A much-travelled midfielder, despite 18 years of professional football, he never spent more than two seasons at any one club. He played for numerous English clubs, predominantly in the [Midlands](/source/Midlands_(England)), and also played in Germany. In the latter part of his career, he was easily recognizable due to his iconic [long hair](/source/long_hair). His more notable spells were with [Ipswich Town](/source/Ipswich_Town_F.C.), [Sheffield Wednesday](/source/Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C.), [Birmingham City](/source/Birmingham_City_F.C.), and [Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.); he played around fifty games for each club. In all, he played 386 games in the [English Football League](/source/English_Football_League) and more than 42 games in German football. He played in all of the top four divisions of English football, with his greatest honour being a runners-up medal in the [League Cup](/source/EFL_Cup) in [2001](/source/2001_Football_League_Cup_final).

==Club career==
===Burnley===
Starting his professional career with [Third Division](/source/Football_League_Third_Division) [Wigan Athletic](/source/Wigan_Athletic_F.C.) in 1990, Sonner never made a first-team appearance for [Bryan Hamilton](/source/Bryan_Hamilton)'s side, and so signed with [Frank Casper](/source/Frank_Casper_(footballer))'s [Fourth Division](/source/Football_League_Fourth_Division) [Burnley](/source/Burnley_F.C.) in March 1991.<ref>{{cite web |title=DANNY SONNER - Clarets Mad |url=http://www.clarets-mad.co.uk/feat/ed35/danny_sonnernbsp_340068/index.shtml |website=clarets-mad.co.uk |accessdate=27 June 2019}}</ref> After Casper was replaced by [Jimmy Mullen](/source/Jimmy_Mullen_(footballer%2C_born_1952)), Sonner barely featured at [Turf Moor](/source/Turf_Moor) during their table-topping [1991–92 season](/source/1991%E2%80%9392_in_English_football) and so was [loan](/source/Loan_(sports))ed out to [Mike Walsh](/source/Mike_Walsh_(footballer))'s [Bury](/source/Bury_F.C.), back in the fourth tier, in November 1992, staying for the rest of [the season](/source/1992%E2%80%9393_in_English_football).

===Germany===
Making little impact in the [English Football League](/source/English_Football_League), he packed his bags and moved to Germany for the start of the 1993–94 season, signing with [NOFV-Oberliga Süd](/source/NOFV-Oberliga_S%C3%BCd) side [FC Erzgebirge Aue](/source/FC_Erzgebirge_Aue). After Aue's [promotion](/source/Promotion_and_relegation) he played in the third-tier [Regionalliga Nordost](/source/Fu%C3%9Fball-Regionalliga_Nordost) for the [1994–95](/source/1994%E2%80%9395_Regionalliga) season. He spent the 1995–96 season with [Preußen Köln](/source/FC_Viktoria_K%C3%B6ln) in the [Oberliga](/source/Fu%C3%9Fball-Oberliga) [Nordrhein](/source/Oberliga_Nordrhein).

===Ipswich Town to Sheffield Wednesday===
It was whilst at Cologne that he was plucked from obscurity by [Ipswich Town](/source/Ipswich_Town_F.C.) [manager](/source/Manager_(association_football)) [George Burley](/source/George_Burley). Sonner would spend the [1996–97](/source/1996%E2%80%9397_in_English_football) season in the English [First Division](/source/Football_League_First_Division).

In two seasons with the club, he played 56 league games, half of which were [substitute](/source/substitute_(association_football)) appearances. However, he and Burley soon fell out, and Sonner was on the move to [Danny Wilson](/source/Danny_Wilson_(footballer%2C_born_1960))'s [Sheffield Wednesday](/source/Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C.) in October 1998 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £75,000. Once again, Sonner had fallen on his feet, spending the [1998–99 season](/source/1998%E2%80%9399_FA_Premier_League) in the [Premier League](/source/Premier_League).<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.sporting-heroes.net/football-heroes/displayhero_club.asp?HeroID=28585|title=Sheffield Wednesday FC 1998-2000|work=sporting-heroes.net|accessdate=28 June 2009}}</ref> He played the club's 8–0 thumping at the hands of [Newcastle United](/source/Newcastle_United_F.C.) at [St James' Park](/source/St_James'_Park) on 19 September, and Wednesday suffered [relegation](/source/promotion_and_relegation) at the end of the [1999–2000 season](/source/1999%E2%80%932000_FA_Premier_League). He was not retained for [the following season](/source/2000%E2%80%9301_in_English_football) after failing to agree a new [contract](/source/Association_football_contracts) and was forced to search for a new club.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/northern_ireland/817274.stm|title=Sheffield Wednesday lose Sonner and Nolan|date=4 July 2000|work=BBC Sport|access-date=28 June 2009}}</ref>

===Birmingham City===
He soon signed for [Birmingham City](/source/Birmingham_City_F.C.),<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.sporting-heroes.net/football-heroes/displayhero_club.asp?HeroID=28586|title=Birmingham City FC 2000-2002|work=sporting-heroes.net|accessdate=28 June 2009}}</ref> where he helped the club to the [2001 League Cup final](/source/2001_Football_League_Cup_final). In the quarter-finals, he gave his old club some food for thought, scoring a 2–0 victory over the "Owls" on December 12, 2000.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/worthington_cup/1065981.stm|title=Sonner shines in the rain|date=12 December 2000|work=BBC Sport|access-date=28 June 2009}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/b/birmingham_city/1068514.stm|title=Former Owl makes his point|date=13 December 2000|work=BBC Sport|access-date=28 June 2009}}</ref> In the final he was replaced by [Bryan Hughes](/source/Bryan_Hughes) after 71 minutes and was forced to watch his team lose the [penalty shoot-out](/source/Penalty_shoot-out_(association_football)) to [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool_F.C.) 5–4, after a 1–1 draw in normal time. In a [play-off](/source/English_Football_League_play-offs) semi-final defeat at [Preston North End](/source/Preston_North_End_F.C.)'s [Deepdale](/source/Deepdale), Sonner, teammate [Michael Johnson](/source/Michael_Johnson_(footballer%2C_born_1973)) and boss [Trevor Francis](/source/Trevor_Francis) were all charged with misconduct by [the Football Association](/source/the_Football_Association),<ref>{{cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/b/birmingham_city/1461135.stm|title=Blues trio face FA charges|date=27 July 2001|work=BBC Sport|access-date=28 June 2009}}</ref> Sonner and Johnson were also charged for using abusive language.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/b/birmingham_city/1513131.stm|title=Francis faces FA rap|date=28 August 2001|work=BBC Sport|access-date=28 June 2009}}</ref> Sonner was fined £1,000 following a hearing.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/b/birmingham_city/1563163.stm|title=Francis fined over conduct|date=25 September 2001|work=BBC Sport|access-date=28 June 2009}}</ref>

He was [sent off](/source/Ejection_(sports)) 77 minutes into a 1–0 home defeat by [West Bromwich Albion](/source/West_Bromwich_Albion_F.C.) after a poor challenge on [Phil Gilchrist](/source/Phil_Gilchrist).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/b/birmingham_city/1644666.stm|title=Mills frustrated by defeat|date=8 November 2001|work=BBC Sport|access-date=28 June 2009}}</ref> Not long after this [Steve Bruce](/source/Steve_Bruce) was appointed as the club's new manager. Bruce never selected Sonner for a matchday squad, so he played no part in the [2002 play-off final](/source/2002_Football_League_First_Division_play-off_final).

===Walsall===
After training with [Wolverhampton Wanderers](/source/Wolverhampton_Wanderers_F.C.),<ref>{{cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/w/wolverhampton_wanderers/2123156.stm|title=Sonner trains at Wolves|date=11 July 2002|work=BBC Sport|access-date=28 June 2009}}</ref> he spent the [2002–03](/source/2002%E2%80%9303_in_English_football) season with [Walsall](/source/Walsall_F.C.).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/w/walsall/2136222.stm|title=Sonner seals Saddlers switch|date=18 July 2002|work=BBC Sport|access-date=28 June 2009}}</ref> He got off to a bad start, wrestling opposition player [Tommy Smith](/source/Tommy_Smith_(footballer%2C_born_1980)) to the ground in a 2–0 defeat at [Watford](/source/Watford_F.C.), earning a [red card](/source/Fouls_and_misconduct_(association_football)) and causing manager [Colin Lee](/source/Colin_Lee) to brand his behaviour "a disgrace".<ref>{{cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/w/walsall/2248436.stm |title=Sonner fined by Walsall|date=10 September 2002|work=BBC Sport|access-date=28 June 2009}}</ref> He managed to recover his reputation, scoring four goals in 28 games. ===Nottingham Forest===

At Forest, a bad miss caused the late [Brian Clough](/source/Brian_Clough) to say: "I wish I'd been out there.
