Born in [Sydney](/source/Sydney), Kay was a Victoria-based centre, capped twice for the [Wallabies](/source/Australia_national_rugby_union_team). He made his debut in a win over the [All Blacks](/source/All_Blacks) at Lancaster Park, Christchurch in the 2nd Test of the [1958 tour of New Zealand](/source/1958_Australia_rugby_union_tour_of_New_Zealand). An ankle injury cost him his place for the 3rd Test and his second cap came the following year in Sydney against the [British Lions](/source/British_%26_Irish_Lions).<ref>{{cite news |title=Kay Chosen As R.U. Kay, a carpenter and joiner by trade, was a solder in the [Australian Army](/source/Australian_Army) with the [Royal Australian Engineers](/source/Royal_Australian_Engineers).
