==History==
The fort of '''Donkov''' was founded by the Princes of [Ryazan](/source/Ryazan) in the late 14th century and took its name from the [Don River](/source/Don_River_(Russia)).{{citation needed|date=March 2014}} The fort stood on the left bank of the Don, about {{convert|34|km|sp=us}} from the modern town, until 1568, when it was destroyed by the [Crimean Tatars](/source/Crimean_Tatars). It was then restored on a better fortified location but was again relocated in 1618.
It is shown as ''Donko'' in [Mercator](/source/Gerardus_Mercator)'s ''Atlas'' (1596),<ref>''[Taurica Chresonesus, Nostra aetate Przecopsca et Gazara dicitur](/source/%3AFile%3AAtlas_Cosmographicae_(Mercator)_106.jpg)'' in ''Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes de Fabrica Mundi et Fabricati Fugura'' (1596).</ref> and as ''Donkagorod'' in [Resania](/source/Principality_of_Ryazan) in [Joan Blaeu](/source/Joan_Blaeu)'s map of 1645.<ref>''[Russiæ, vulgo Moscovia, pars australis](/source/%3AFile%3ABlaeu_1645_-_Russi%C3%A6_vulgo_Moscovia_pars_australis.jpg)''
in ''Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, sive Atlas Novus in quo Tabulæ et Descriptiones Omnium Regionum, Editæ a Guiljel et Ioanne Blaeu'', 1645.
</ref>

By the 18th century, its spelling changed from Donkov to Dankov. The town was chartered by [Catherine the Great](/source/Catherine_the_Great) but was demoted in status to that of a rural locality between 1796 and 1804 and again between 1924 and 1959.{{citation needed|date=March 2014}}

On the night of 25 September 1918, during the [Russian Civil War](/source/Russian_Civil_War) eleven hostages being held by the Ryazan Region Cheka were executed on wasteland adjoining the Dankov town cemetery. In 2011 descendants of the hostages raised crosses and a memorial there.<ref>https://en.mapofmemory.org/48-01</ref>
