In 1959, Thomas was born as Daniela Gontijo Alves Pinto in Brazil.
Thomas' father is [Ziraldo Alves Pinto](/source/Ziraldo_Alves_Pinto), a cartoonist. Thomas' brother is [Antonio Pinto](/source/Antonio_Pinto_(composer)).

== Career ==
In 1994, Thomas co-directed her first feature film, ''[Terra Estrangeira](/source/Terra_Estrangeira)'' aka Foreign Land, alongside [Walter Salles](/source/Walter_Salles). Thomas is also its screenwriter and production designer.<ref name="allmovie_thomas"/>
