==Biography==
McCook was born in [Canonsburg, Pennsylvania](/source/Canonsburg%2C_Pennsylvania), the son of an Irish revolutionary, George McCook, who had fled to the [United States](/source/United_States) about 1780. He graduated from [Jefferson College](/source/Washington_and_Jefferson_College). On August 28, 1817, he married Martha Latimer; they would have twelve children (nine boys and three girls). In 1826, the family moved to [New Lisbon, Ohio](/source/Lisbon%2C_Ohio), then to [Carrollton](/source/Carrollton%2C_Ohio), where McCook practiced law. He became an elder in the [Presbyterian](/source/Presbyterian) church and was a pioneer in the regional [Sunday School](/source/Sunday_School) movement. With the outbreak of the Civil War, McCook, although 63 years old, volunteered his services to the [Union](/source/Union_(American_Civil_War)). He was commissioned as a [major](/source/Major_(United_States)) and paymaster. When [Confederate](/source/Confederate_States_Army) [Brig. Gen.](/source/Brigadier_General) [John H. Morgan](/source/John_Hunt_Morgan) led his troops through southern Ohio during [Morgan's Raid](/source/Morgan's_Raid), Major McCook joined in the advance of the Union pursuit. Early in the morning of July 19, 1863, Federal troops attacked Morgan at [Buffington Island](/source/Battle_of_Buffington_Island), where the Confederates were planning to cross the [Ohio River](/source/Ohio_River) back into [Western Virginia](/source/Western_Virginia). McCook was shot and mortally wounded.
