Jutras became a member of the [Barreau du Quebec](/source/Barreau_du_Quebec) in 1984.<ref name="BarQc">{{cite web |title=Me Daniel Jutras, Ad. E. |url=https://www.barreau.qc.ca/fr/bottin-des-avocats/#!/detail/c5-a75fK-g1r7Laa-lI6_JVOLjm_STCa3ejcM-pdrUY |website=Barreau du Québec |accessdate=13 November 2020}}</ref> From 1985 to 2020, he taught law at [McGill University](/source/McGill_University).<ref name="UdeM"/> During his time at McGill, he became director of the Institute of Comparative Law from 1998 to 2002, served as dean of the McGill Faculty of Law from 2009 to 2016, and held the Wainwright Chair in Civil Law from 2010 to 2020.<ref name="UdeM"/><ref name="JdeM"/>

Jutras served as executive legal officer for the [Chief Justice](/source/Chief_Justice) at the [Supreme Court of Canada](/source/Supreme_Court_of_Canada), the Right Honourable [Beverley McLachlin](/source/Beverley_McLachlin), from 2002 to 2004.<ref name="UdeM"/>

Jutras was named an Officer of the [Order of Canada](/source/Order_of_Canada) in recognition of his contributions to university life, Canadian political life and innovation in teaching.<ref name="UdeM"/>

== Coalition Avenir Québec's Tuition Hike ==
When the [CAQ](/source/Coalition_Avenir_Qu%C3%A9bec) introduced a tuition hike for out-of-province students in 2023, Jutras was one of five leaders of French post-secondary institutions who penned an open letter criticizing the tuition plan.
