He scored 46 goals in 235 matches in the [Romanian First Division](/source/Liga_I), 47 goals in 141 matches in the [Romanian Second Division](/source/Liga_II) and 8 goals in 19 matches in the [Swiss Third Division](/source/1._Liga_Classic).<ref name=RS>{{RomanianSoccer|464/daniel-stefan-costescu}}</ref> His first match in [Divizia A](/source/Divizia_A) (Romanian First Division) was [Olimpia Satu Mare](/source/Olimpia_Satu_Mare) – [Petrolul Ploiești](/source/FC_Petrolul_Ploie%C8%99ti) 3–0 on 1 August 1998, while playing for [Petrolul Ploiești](/source/FC_Petrolul_Ploie%C8%99ti).<ref name=RS/> He was selected once in the Romanian Divisionary National Team (comprising players playing only in the Romanian leagues).<ref name=RS/>

Born in [Câmpina](/source/C%C3%A2mpina), [Prahova county](/source/Prahova_county), Costescu began playing football with ''Sterom Câmpina'' in [Divizia D](/source/Liga_IV) (Romanian Fourth Division), and in 1996 he moved to the representative team of the same town, [Poiana Câmpina](/source/FCM_C%C3%A2mpina), in [Divizia B](/source/Liga_II), the Romanian Second Division. He played 2 years for [Poiana Câmpina](/source/FCM_C%C3%A2mpina), scoring 15 goals in 60 games, helping the team getting a top 10 finish in both seasons.<ref name=RS/>

He then attracted the interest of [Petrolul Ploiești](/source/FC_Petrolul_Ploie%C8%99ti) in [Divizia A](/source/Liga_I), the best team from the [Prahova county](/source/Prahova_county), three-time champions of [Romania](/source/Romania). At [Petrolul Ploiești](/source/FC_Petrolul_Ploie%C8%99ti) he established himself as an important striker in the Romanian league, scoring 27 goals between 1999 and 2002. During his time at [Petrolul Ploiești](/source/FC_Petrolul_Ploie%C8%99ti) he caught the eyes of [Romania](/source/Romania)n greats [Steaua București](/source/FC_Steaua_Bucure%C8%99ti) and Dinamo Bucuresti.<ref name=RS/>

In 2004, he transferred to a well-established club in Romania, [FC Argeș Pitești](/source/FC_Arge%C8%99_Pite%C8%99ti), 2-time champions of Romania and the team that gave players like [Nicolae Dobrin](/source/Nicolae_Dobrin), [Adrian Mutu](/source/Adrian_Mutu), [Adrian Neaga](/source/Adrian_Neaga), [Dănuț Coman](/source/D%C4%83nu%C8%9B_Coman) and [Paul Codrea](/source/Paul_Codrea). But, unfortunately for him, his time at [FC Argeș](/source/FC_Arge%C8%99_Pite%C8%99ti) was not one of the best, managing to score just 2 goals in 1 season.<ref name=RS/><ref name=WF/>

He was transferred in 2006 by [Divizia A](/source/Liga_I) newcomers [Unirea Urziceni](/source/Unirea_Urziceni), who were in need of an experienced man upfront. Unirea proved to be a surprise-pack, finishing 10th in the league, and Daniel scored 2 goals for his new team.<ref name=RS/><ref name=WF/>
