# Daniel Burling

**Daniel J. "Dan" Burling** (born January 11, 1947)[1] was a [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)) member of the [New York State Assembly](/source/New_York_State_Assembly) representing Assembly District 147, which comprises a number of communities located in [Upstate New York](/source/Upstate_New_York), including [Allegany County](/source/Allegany_County,_New_York), [Genesee County](/source/Genesee_County,_New_York), [Livingston County](/source/Livingston_County,_New_York), and [Wyoming County](/source/Wyoming_County,_New_York). He was formerly the [Minority Whip](/source/Minority_Whip) in the Assembly.

## Early life and career

Burling was born in [Batavia, New York](/source/Batavia,_New_York). He graduated from [Ilion](/source/Ilion,_New_York) High School, after which he enlisted in the [U.S. Marine Corps](/source/U.S._Marine_Corps) (1965–1969), including a tour in [Vietnam](/source/Vietnam_War). A licensed pilot and aircraft mechanic, he was the airport manager at Nellis Airport in [Fort Plain](/source/Fort_Plain,_New_York) in 1972. He graduated from the [Empire State Military Academy](/source/Empire_State_Military_Academy), receiving a commission as a [Second Lieutenant](/source/Second_Lieutenant) in the [U.S. Army Reserve](/source/U.S._Army_Reserve) in 1976.[1]

Burling graduated from [Herkimer County Community College](/source/Herkimer_County_Community_College) in 1977, then received a [B.S.](/source/B.S.) degree from the [University at Buffalo](/source/University_at_Buffalo) School of Pharmacy in 1980. A registered pharmacist, he owns Burling Drug, Inc., which had a location in [Attica](/source/Attica_(village),_New_York) (1987–1996) and another in [Corfu](/source/Corfu,_New_York) (1991–present). He also was an intern and staff pharmacist at Genesee Memorial Hospital and a consulting pharmacist at the Genesee County Nursing Home in Batavia.[1][2]

## Political career

Burling was a member of the [Genesee County](/source/Genesee_County,_New_York) Legislature from 1993 until 1998. He was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 1998.[1] He won the November 2008 [general election](/source/General_election) with 71 percent of the vote[3][4] and ran uncontested in the November 2010 general election.[5][6] Burling did not seek reelection in 2012.[7]

## Personal life

Burling and his wife Jean reside in the [Town of Alexander](/source/Alexander_(town),_New_York). They have two children, Mary and David.[1]
