Greg Miller, a social entrepreneur and dance aficionado, established the non-profit organization in December, 2006 and led an all-volunteer group that produced the inaugural parade on May 19, 2007. Over 2300 dancers from 75 organizations made their way down [Manhattan](/source/Manhattan)’s Broadway and Fifth Avenue on and around eight floats. Ending in front of the [Washington Square Memorial Arch](/source/Washington_Square_Park%2C_New_York), the parade culminated in 31 performances highlighting native New York [dance style](/source/dance_style)s such as [hip-hop](/source/hip-hop_dance), [jazz dance](/source/jazz_dance), [break dancing](/source/break_dancing), and [salsa](/source/Salsa_(dance)). Participants included the original [B-boy](/source/B-boy)s, [Keith and Kevin Smith](/source/Keith_and_Kevin_Smith); DJs [Danny Tenaglia](/source/Danny_Tenaglia) and [Kool Herc](/source/Kool_Herc); and [Frieda Williams](/source/Frieda_Williams).

In 2008 with [Washington Square Park](/source/Washington_Square_Park) under renovation, the parade terminated in [Tompkins Square Park](/source/Tompkins_Square_Park). Thirty-nine performances took place on stage in the park, and workshops gave the public the chance to learn dance.
The 2010 Dance Parade took place on Saturday May 22.
