**Dana Ann Remus** (born 1974/1975) is an American lawyer who served as [White House counsel](/source/White_House_Counsel) for [U.S. president](/source/President_of_the_United_States) [Joe Biden](/source/Joe_Biden) from January 2021 to July 2022. Prior to her appointment as White House counsel, Remus was [general counsel](/source/General_counsel) for [Joe Biden's 2020 presidential campaign](/source/Joe_Biden_2020_presidential_campaign). Earlier in her career, she was deputy assistant to the president and deputy counsel for ethics during the [presidency of Barack Obama](/source/Presidency_of_Barack_Obama), was general counsel for the [Obama Foundation](/source/Obama_Foundation) from 2017 to 2019, and was counsel to [Michelle Obama](/source/Michelle_Obama).[2]

## Early life and education

Dana Remus was born in [New Hampshire](/source/New_Hampshire)[2] and raised in the town of [Bedford](/source/Bedford%2C_New_Hampshire).[3] She earned a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree in [East Asian studies](/source/East_Asian_studies) from [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University) in 1997[4] and a [Juris Doctor](/source/Juris_Doctor) from [Yale Law School](/source/Yale_Law_School) in 2002.[5][6] While at Harvard, Remus [rowed](/source/Rowing_(sport)) as senior heavyweight crew captain and tried out for the [United States national women's rowing team](/source/United_States_National_Women's_Rowing_Team).[7]

## Career

After graduating from law school, Remus [clerked](/source/Law_clerk) for Judge [Anthony Scirica](/source/Anthony_Scirica) of the [United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit](/source/United_States_Court_of_Appeals_for_the_Third_Circuit). She eventually joined [Cravath, Swaine & Moore](/source/Cravath%2C_Swaine_%26_Moore) (2002–05). In 2006, she began her academic career as an inaugural faculty member at the newly established [Drexel University](/source/Drexel_University) College of Law (now [Thomas R. Kline School of Law](/source/Thomas_R._Kline_School_of_Law_(Drexel_University))) (2006–08).[8] In 2008, she clerked for Justice [Samuel Alito](/source/Samuel_Alito) of the [Supreme Court of the United States](/source/Supreme_Court_of_the_United_States).[9] She then taught from 2009 to 2013 at the [University of New Hampshire School of Law](/source/University_of_New_Hampshire_School_of_Law)[10] and property law and judicial and legal ethics at the [University of North Carolina School of Law](/source/University_of_North_Carolina_School_of_Law) (2013–16).

Remus joined the [Obama administration](/source/Obama_administration), serving in 2016 as Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy Counsel for Ethics. After Obama left office, Remus joined the [Obama Foundation](/source/Obama_Foundation) (2017–20) as general counsel and also served as counsel to [Michelle Obama](/source/Michelle_Obama). She left the Foundation in 2019 to become general counsel in 2020 for the [Joe Biden 2020 presidential campaign](/source/Joe_Biden_2020_presidential_campaign).[11]

### Biden administration

Remus was named [White House counsel](/source/White_House_Counsel) on November 17, 2020.[12] She left her position in July 2022 and was replaced by [Stuart F. Delery](/source/Stuart_F._Delery).[13][14]

Remus co-lead legal offensives on behalf of the [Democratic Party](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) against third-party candidates in the [2024 United States presidential election](/source/2024_United_States_presidential_election), alongside outside lawyer [Robert D. Lenhard](/source/Robert_D._Lenhard).[15]

## Personal life

Dana Remus is married to [Brett M. Holmgren](/source/Brett_M._Holmgren), who served as the [assistant secretary of state for intelligence and research](/source/Assistant_Secretary_of_State_for_Intelligence_and_Research) in the [Biden administration](/source/Presidency_of_Joe_Biden). The wedding took place on January 21, 2018, in Washington, D.C., with former president [Barack Obama](/source/Barack_Obama) officiating.[16] The couple have one son.[17] Remus was previously married to Michael J. "Mike" Irwin, a rowing coach.[18]
