===Israeli Ambassador to Ireland===

She blamed Hamas for the ongoing conflict when further questioned by [Fran McNulty](/source/Fran_McNulty), television presenter with [RTÉ](/source/RT%C3%89), for Israel's rationale for "denying people who are being bombed the right to leave and the right to food, medicine and water.<ref>{{Cite news |title=Varadkar accuses Israeli government of breaching international law in Gaza siege |url=https://www.irishtimes.com/politics/2023/10/12/varadkar-accuses-israeli-government-of-breaching-international-law-in-gaza-siege/ |access-date=2023-11-16 |newspaper=The Irish Times |language=en}}</ref>

On 15 November 2023 a [Social Democrats](/source/Social_Democrats_(Ireland)) motion proposing the expulsion of Ambassador Erlich was defeated in [Dáil Éireann](/source/D%C3%A1il_%C3%89ireann) following a government counter-motion.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2023-11-15 |title=Motion to expel the Israeli Ambassador Dana Erlich is defeated in the Dáil |url=https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/politics/motion-to-expel-the-israeli-ambassador-dana-erlich-is-defeated-in-the-dail/a2076090133.html |access-date=2023-11-16 |website=Independent.ie |language=en}}</ref>

In February 2024, [Catherine Connolly](/source/Catherine_Connolly), who was then the [Leas-Cheann Comhairle](/source/Leas-Cheann_Comhairle) of [Dáil Éireann](/source/D%C3%A1il_%C3%89ireann), accused Erlich of "propagating utter propaganda" on Irish radio and called for her to appear before the Dáil to account for her statements.<ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/politics/arid-41331775.html | title=Israeli ambassador should be called before Dáil and 'made account' for 'propaganda' | date=14 February 2024 }}</ref>

In March 2024, the [Garda Síochána](/source/Garda_S%C3%ADoch%C3%A1na) opened an investigation into death threats against Erlich following the delivery of a package containing white powder to the Israeli Embassy in Dublin which was accompanied by graphic images of Israelis killed by Hamas on 7 October 2023, and a written threat to Erlich. The powder was later discovered to be sugar.<ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.breakingnews.ie/israel-hamas/death-threat-and-white-powder-sent-to-israeli-ambassador-in-dublin-1605055.html | title=Death threat and 'white powder' sent to Israeli ambassador in Dublin | date=22 March 2024 }}</ref>

On 11 April 2024, in an opinion piece for the [Irish Times](/source/Irish_Times), Erlich reported that her invitation to attend the [Fine Gael](/source/Fine_Gael) [Ard Fheis](/source/Ard_Fheis) had been withdrawn linking this to what she described as a "contagion" of anti-Israel sentiment. She also characterised anti-Israel sentiment in Ireland as [anti-semitic](/source/anti-semitism) and questioned Ireland's neutrality. She said that Ireland's plans to recognise the [State of Palestine](/source/State_of_Palestine) were akin to "rewarding terrorism".<ref>{{cite news | url=https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2024/04/11/israeli-ambassador-dana-erlich-a-unilateral-recognition-of-a-palestinian-state-at-this-point-sends-a-dangerous-signal/ | title=Israeli Ambassador Dana Erlich: A unilateral recognition of a Palestinian State at this point sends a dangerous signal | newspaper=[The Irish Times](/source/The_Irish_Times) }}</ref> The following day she claimed Israel was being discriminated against by Ireland following an announcement by [Fianna Fáil](/source/Fianna_F%C3%A1il) that they would not be inviting the Israeli or Russian ambassadors to their [Ard Fheis](/source/Ard_Fheis).<ref>{{cite web | url=https://independent.ie/irish-news/israeli-ambassador-says-her-country-is-being-discriminated-against-after-fianna-fail-ard-fheis-snub/a1773089067.html | title=Israeli ambassador says her country is being 'discriminated against' after Fianna Fáil ard fheis snub | date=11 April 2024 }}</ref> Meanwhile, [Micheál Martin](/source/Miche%C3%A1l_Martin) described her comments about the recognition of Palestinian sovereignty as "absurd and unacceptable".<ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/politics/micheal-martin-israeli-ambassador-unacceptable-32576489 | title=Micheal Martin brands Israeli Ambassador's comments as 'absurd and unacceptable' | date=12 April 2024 }}</ref>

In May 2024, Erlich responded to the deselection of Social Democrats [local election](/source/2024_Irish_local_elections) candidate, Orli Degani, a Jewish Israeli citizen born in Germany, saying that she "appears to have been discriminated against because of her nationality".<ref>[https://www.irishtimes.com/politics/2024/05/01/jewish-social-democrats-candidate-claims-she-was-dropped-after-raising-concerns-about-anti-semitism/ Jewish Social Democrats candidate claims she was dropped after raising concerns about anti-Semitism], irishtimes.com, May 1, 2024</ref> She described Delgani as one of a "growing number" of Jewish and Israeli people in Ireland who feel increasingly targeted by an atmosphere of anti-Israeli sentiment. The statement was rejected by Social Democrats leader, [Holly Cairns](/source/Holly_Cairns), who described the claims as "scurrilous and false" and an attempt to deflect from the "bigger, and much more important issue of the more than 34,000 people now killed in Gaza by the Israeli Government".<ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.thejournal.ie/holly-cairns-israeli-candidate-6371683-May2024/ | title=Holly Cairns rejects ambassador's claim that Soc Dem's 'discriminated' against Israeli candidate | date=4 May 2024 }}</ref> Cairns later confirmed that the reason for Delgani's deselection was because her position on Gaza differed from that of the party.<ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/politics/social-democrats-leader-holly-cairns-says-deselection-of-israeli-candidate-wont-hurt-party-in-elections/a670501036.html | title=Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns says deselection of Israeli candidate won't hurt party in elections | date=15 May 2024 }}</ref>

In May 2024, Israel recalled its ambassadors from Ireland and Norway after the countries officially recognized Palestine as a state.<ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.thejournal.ie/israel-recalls-ambassadors-from-ireland-and-norway-after-recognition-of-palestine-state-6386095-May2024/ | title=Israel recalls ambassadors from Ireland and Norway after recognition of Palestine state | date=22 May 2024 }}</ref> In response, Erlich described Iran and Hamas' support for the recognition as a "prize for terrorism" and accused the Irish government for "imposing a peace process."<ref>{{Cite web |last=Kenny |first=Ellen |title=Israeli Ambassador: Recognising Palestine a 'prize for terrorism' |url=https://www.newstalk.com/news/israeli-ambassador-recognising-palestine-a-prize-for-terrorism-1727573 |access-date=2024-05-31 |website=Newstalk |language=en}}</ref> In a subsequent interview for the [Irish Times](/source/Irish_Times), she said that there would be "a review of bilateral relations" between Israel and Ireland.<ref>{{Cite news |title=Ireland has a 'disproportionate obsession with Israel', says ambassador Dana Erlich |url=https://www.irishtimes.com/politics/2024/05/23/ireland-has-a-disproportionate-obsession-with-israel-says-ambassador-dana-erlich/ |access-date=2024-05-31 |newspaper=The Irish Times |language=en}}</ref>

On 25 May 2024, in an interview with the [Irish Examiner](/source/Irish_Examiner), President Higgins accused Ambassador Erlich of "encouraging fear" among the Jewish community in Ireland and denounced her claims of growing anti-semitism in Ireland as "grossly irresponsible" describing it as a "PR exercise by an administration that is guilty of continuing breaches of international law".<ref>{{Cite web |last=Loughlin |first=Elaine |date=2024-05-25 |title=Higgins: Israeli ambassador 'irresponsible' in claims about level of antisemitism in Ireland |url=https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-41402410.html |access-date=2024-05-31 |website=Irish Examiner |language=en}}</ref>

On 7 September 2024 it was reported that Erlich would not be returning to Ireland until "relations between the two states improve substantially".<ref>{{cite news | url=https://www.irishtimes.com/politics/2024/09/07/no-prospect-of-israeli-ambassador-returning-to-ireland-unless-relations-improve-says-embassy/ | title=No prospect of Israeli ambassador returning to Ireland unless relations improve, says embassy | newspaper=[The Irish Times](/source/The_Irish_Times) }}</ref> On 16 September 2024, the [Irish Independent](/source/Irish_Independent) published an opinion piece by Erlich to mark the first anniversary of her appointment as Ambassador. In it she reiterated her view that anti-Israel sentiment in Ireland is anti-semitic and makes several claims of an anti-Israel bias in Irish politics and media.<ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.independent.ie/opinion/israeli-ambassador-dana-erlich-irelands-lack-of-empathy-for-plight-of-israelis-is-bewildering/a2131434661.html | title=Israeli ambassador Dana Erlich: Ireland's lack of empathy for plight of Israelis is bewildering | date=15 September 2024 }}</ref>

In an opinion piece in the [Jerusalem Post](/source/Jerusalem_Post) on 23 September 2024, [Alan Shatter](/source/Alan_Shatter), a former [Irish government](/source/Government_of_Ireland) [minister](/source/Minister_(government)) and prominent member of the Irish Jewish community, called on Minister Katz to reverse the decision to recall Erlich, describing her withdrawal as an "act of crass stupidity".<ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.jpost.com/opinion/article-821305 | title=Ireland's Palestine recognition: How Israel's diplomatic response missed the mark - opinion | date=23 September 2024 }}</ref>

On the first anniversary of the [October 7 attack on Israel](/source/2023_Hamas-led_attack_on_Israel), Erlich was interviewed on Irish radio station [Newstalk](/source/Newstalk) and spoke about what she sees as the rise in anti-semitism in Ireland, claiming that "Jewish people in Ireland are afraid to speak in Hebrew or to show any physical manifestations of their identity because of a fear of retaliation". She claimed that the media in Ireland was helping to spread "baseless accusations" against Israel.<ref>{{cite web|last=Staines|first=Michael| url=https://www.newstalk.com/news/israeli-ambassador-im-scared-for-the-future-of-jewish-communities-in-ireland-1771639 | title=Israel Ambassador: 'I'm scared for the future of Jewish communities in Ireland'| date=7 October 2024|website=Newstalk |language=en }}</ref> Erlich also accused [UNICEF](/source/UNICEF) of failing to call for the release of Israeli hostages. This was refuted by [UNICEF Ireland](/source/UNICEF_Ireland) executive director, [Peter Power](/source/Peter_Power), later that week on the same show when he read out statements made by UNICEF condemning both the abduction of hostages, as well as the attacks made on Israel by Hamas.<ref>{{cite web|last=Daly|first=Aoife|url=https://www.newstalk.com/news/the-first-casualty-in-war-is-truth-unicef-executive-rejects-israeli-ambassadors-claims-1773257|title='The first casualty in war is truth' - UNICEF executive rejects Israeli ambassador's claims| date=11 October 2024|website=Newstalk |language=en}}</ref>

In October 2024, Erlich described the [Occupied Territories Bill](/source/Occupied_Territories_Bill) proposing to ban trade between Ireland and illegal Israeli settlements occupying Palestinian territory as "a discriminatory attempt that aims to target Israel" and an "attack on the Jewish people’s legitimacy to a secure state in their ancestral homeland".<ref>{{cite news | url=https://www.irishtimes.com/politics/2024/10/24/occupied-territories-bill-a-discriminatory-attempt-aiming-to-target-israel-says-ambassador/ | title=Occupied Territories Bill a 'discriminatory attempt aiming to target Israel', says ambassador | newspaper=[The Irish Times](/source/The_Irish_Times) }}</ref>

In December 2024, Israel announced that it would close its embassy in Dublin due to what it described as "the extreme anti-Israel policies of the Irish government". This decision came a week after the Irish government decided to formally intervene in South Africa's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. South Africa alleges that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, a claim that Israel vehemently denies.<ref name="auto1"/> Erlich said that the decision was taken due to a "hostile atmosphere [against Israel] in Ireland, fostered by the Irish government".<ref>{{cite web | url=http://www.rte.ie/news/2024/1216/1486678-israeli-embassy/ | title=Israeli foreign minister calls Simon Harris 'antisemitic' | website=[RTÉ.ie](/source/RT%C3%89.ie) | date=16 December 2024 }}</ref>

In December 2024, Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland, said that when he accepted her credentials, he initially assumed the comments were due to a lack of experience, but he “later realised the comments were part of a pattern to damage Ireland."<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.hotpress.com/opinion/president-michael-d-higgins-says-it-is-deep-slander-for-israel-to-accuse-irish-people-of-antisemitism-over-gaza-stance-23063444|title=President Michael D Higgins says it is "deep slander" for Israel to accuse Irish people of antisemitism over Gaza stance|first=Caroline|last=Kelly|website=Hotpress}}</ref>

In January 2025, Erlich said that she would remain as ambassador until mid-2025 before taking up the post of Israeli ambassador to [Slovakia](/source/Slovakia), however on 25 January 2025 Professor Tom O'Dowd, Chair of Holocaust Education Ireland, said that there was, "a lot of confusion and still is confusion as to whether she is ambassador or not”.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/irish-politicians-are-so-blinded-by-hatred-of-israel-that-theyll-hurt-their-own-economy-israeli-ambassador-dana-erlich/a1644609019.html|title='Irish politicians are so blinded by hatred of Israel that they'll hurt their own economy' – Israeli ambassador Dana Erlich|date=19 January 2025|website=www.independent.ie}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-41561308.html|title=Holocaust academic backs decision to invite Michael D Higgins to Memorial Day event|first=Cormac|last=O'Keeffe|date=25 January 2025|website=Irish Examiner}}</ref> In the midst of this confusion, Erlich continued to give media interviews and make public statements,<ref name="auto2">{{Cite web|url=https://www.thejournal.ie/dana-erlich-spain-ireland-israel-madrid-6596405-Jan2025/|title=Israel's absent Ambassador to Ireland Dana Erlich has turned up in Madrid|first=Niall|last=O'Connor|date=17 January 2025|website=TheJournal.ie}}</ref> alleging that President Higgins' attendance at the 2025 [National Holocaust Memorial Day](/source/Holocaust_memorial_days) commemoration in Dublin, "politicised" the event.<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.rte.ie/news/2025/0127/1493184-holocaust-commemoration/|title=President accused of 'politicising' Holocaust event|first=Ailbhe|last=Conneely|date=27 January 2025|via=www.rte.ie}}</ref>

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs said that notification of the closure of the embassy was received by Dublin on 20 December 2024.<ref name="auto2"/>

===Head of Mission at the Israeli Embassy in Spain===
In August 2025, Erlich was appointed Head of Mission at the Israeli Embassy in Spain.<ref name="auto3"/> In September 2025 she was summoned by the Spanish Foreign Minister [José Manuel Albares](/source/Jos%C3%A9_Manuel_Albares) following comments made by the office of the [Prime Minister of Israel](/source/Prime_Minister_of_Israel) accusing Spain of making a "blatant genocidal threat" against Israel. The [Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs](/source/Ministry_of_Foreign_Affairs_(Spain)) rejected the claims as "false and slanderous".<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://apnews.com/article/israel-spain-gaza-war-eu-arms-embargo-74c6a509b05c7b1a04476c0f7d46d585|title=Spain summons Israel's acting ambassador following comments made by Netanyahu's office|date=12 September 2025|website=AP News}}</ref> The dispute followed criticism of Israel's role in the [Gaza war](/source/Gaza_war) by [Spanish Prime Minister](/source/Prime_Minister_of_Spain), [Pedro Sánchez](/source/Pedro_S%C3%A1nchez).<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://apnews.com/article/israel-spain-gaza-war-eu-arms-embargo-8c7a0e606fca0516f46e61abc4204fc3|title=Spain intensifies criticism of Israeli offensive in Gaza. In October 2025, Erlich accused the Spanish government of actively contributing to the rise of antisemitism, claiming that the government's position on Israel was not out of solidarity with Palestinians but was about harming Israel.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.jpost.com/diaspora/antisemitism/article-869222|title=Spanish gov't contributing to antisemitism, ambassador says | The Jerusalem Post|date=1 October 2025|website=The Jerusalem Post | JPost.com}}</ref>

In April 2026, Erlich was again summoned by the Spanish Foreign Minister following Israel's seizure of the [Gaza Freedom Flotilla](/source/Gaza_Freedom_Flotilla) and the detention of 175 activists including 31 Spanish citizens. The flotilla had set sail from Barcelona in mid-April 2026.<ref>{{Cite web |last=González |first=Miguel |date=2026-04-30 |title=Exteriores convoca a la responsable de la Embajada de Israel para protestar por la captura de buques de la flotilla a Gaza con 31 españoles a bordo |url=https://elpais.com/espana/2026-04-30/exteriores-convoca-a-la-responsable-de-la-embajada-de-israel-para-protestar-por-la-captura-de-buques-de-la-flotilla-para-gaza-con-31-espanoles-a-bordo.html |access-date=2026-05-12 |website=El País |language=es}}</ref>

Also in April 2026, Erlich was forced to deny claims that Israel was considering supporting [Morocco](/source/Morocco)'s claims over the occupied cities of [Ceuta](/source/Ceuta) and [Melilla](/source/Melilla) following reports in the Israeli media that Israel could offer diplomatic support to Morocco. The reports came amid tensions between the US and Spain following Spain's refusal to allow the US to use Spanish military bases for operations linked to the [US/Israeli war with Iran](/source/2026_Iran_war).<ref>{{Cite web |last=Tachfine |first=Khadija |date=2026-05-02 |title=Israel dismisses reports it may back Morocco claims over Ceuta and Melilla |url=https://en.hespress.com/137026-israel-dismisses-reports-it-may-back-morocco-claims-over-ceuta-and-melilla.html |access-date=2026-05-12 |website=HESPRESS English - Morocco News |language=en-US}}</ref>
