**Dan Wool** is an American [composer](/source/Composer) and [sound designer](/source/Sound_design) based in [San Francisco](/source/San_Francisco). He is known for his work across feature films, television, themed entertainment, dance, and experimental installations. Wool has composed music for over 45 feature films and numerous television projects, and was a longtime member of the soundtrack group *[Pray for Rain](/source/Pray_for_Rain_(band))*.[1]

## Career

### Film and television

Wool began his film scoring career *[Sid and Nancy](/source/Sid_and_Nancy)* (1986), directed by [Alex Cox](/source/Alex_Cox).[2] He continued collaborating with Cox on nine films, including [*Straight to Hell*](/source/Straight_to_Hell_(film)) (1987), *[Death and the Compass](/source/Death_and_the_Compass_(film))* (1996), and *Tombstone-Rashomon* (2017).

He was a principal member of *[Pray for Rain](/source/Pray_for_Rain_(band))*, a San Francisco-based [music collective](/source/Musical_collective) that specialized in film and television soundtracks.[1]

Wool has composed music for network television films and episodic series for [ABC](/source/American_Broadcasting_Company), [CBS](/source/CBS), [FOX](/source/FOX), [NBC](/source/NBC), and [HBO](/source/HBO).[3]

#### Collaboration with Phil Tippett

From 2010 to 2021, Wool collaborated with visual effects artist and filmmaker [Phil Tippett](/source/Phil_Tippett), composing the score for Tippett’s [stop-motion](/source/Stop_motion) experimental film *[Mad God](/source/Mad_God)* (2022).[4] The film was released in 2021, and its soundtrack was distributed by [Waxwork Records](/source/Waxwork_Records) in 2022.[5][6]

In 2023, Wool was nominated for an [Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement for Music in a Feature Production](/source/Annie_Award_for_Outstanding_Achievement_for_Music_in_a_Feature_Production) for his work on *Mad God*.[7]

Wool also composed the score for *OUT THERE*, a 2018 experimental short film by Tippett and [Lucy Raven](/source/Lucy_Raven) that was screened at the [Museum of Modern Art](/source/Museum_of_Modern_Art) (MoMA) in [New York City](/source/New_York_City).[8]

#### Themed Entertainment

Wool has provided sound design, original music, and on-site mixing for several immersive theme park rides and attractions. Notable clients include [Tippett Studio](/source/Tippett_Studio), [Sunac Group](/source/Sunac), and [Wanda Group](/source/Wanda_Group).[9][10][11]

His work includes the "Fly Chongqing" and "Fly Sichuan" dome attractions in [China](/source/China), created in partnership with Tippett Studio.[12]

He composed a sound installation for the [A+D Museum](/source/A%2BD_Museum) in [Los Angeles](/source/Los_Angeles) titled “Windshield Perspective” (May–July 2013).[15]

From 2015 to 2018, Wool composed music for the U.S. [Synchronized Swimming](/source/Synchronized_swimming) Team.[16]
