# Dan Monzon

**Daniel Francisco Monzon** (May 17, 1946 – January 21, 1996) was an American professional [baseball](/source/Baseball) [infielder](/source/Infielder), [manager](/source/Manager_(baseball)) and [scout](/source/Scout_(sport)). A [third baseman](/source/Third_baseman), primarily in [minor league baseball](/source/Minor_league_baseball), he appeared in 94 games for the [Minnesota Twins](/source/Minnesota_Twins) of [Major League Baseball](/source/Major_League_Baseball) (MLB) in 1972 and 1973. Listed at 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 m) and 175 pounds (79 kg), he threw and batted right-handed.

## Playing career

Monzon was born in the [Bronx, New York](/source/Bronx,_New_York). He graduated from [James Monroe High School](/source/James_Monroe_High_School_(New_York)) in 1964 and attended [Buena Vista College](/source/Buena_Vista_College) in [Storm Lake, Iowa](/source/Storm_Lake,_Iowa).[1] He was drafted by the [Minnesota Twins](/source/Minnesota_Twins) in the second round of the secondary phase of the [1967 MLB draft](/source/1967_Major_League_Baseball_draft), and enjoyed his finest professional season that year with the [Class A Short Season](/source/Class_A_Short_Season) [Auburn Twins](/source/Auburn_Twins), leading the [New York–Penn League](/source/New_York%E2%80%93Penn_League) in [runs scored](/source/Run_(baseball)), [total bases](/source/Total_bases), and [triples](/source/Triple_(baseball)), tying for the lead in [RBIs](/source/Runs_batted_in), and finishing second in [batting average](/source/Batting_average_(baseball)) (.338).

Monzon also enjoyed stellar seasons in the [Double-A](/source/Double-A_(baseball)) [Southern League](/source/Southern_League_(1964%E2%80%932020)) and [Triple-A](/source/Triple-A_(baseball)) [Pacific Coast League](/source/Pacific_Coast_League). His two seasons with the major league Twins saw him play a [utility](/source/Utility_(baseball)) role, appearing at [second](/source/Second_baseman) and third base, [shortstop](/source/Shortstop), and in the [outfield](/source/Outfield). He batted .244 with no [home runs](/source/Home_runs) and nine RBIs in 131 [at bats](/source/At_bats) in 94 MLB games. He returned to the minor leagues in 1974, where he played through the 1977 season.[2]

## Post-playing career

Monzon's managing career began in 1978 in the [New York Mets](/source/New_York_Mets) organization, where he directed teams at the [Class A](/source/Class_A_(baseball)) and Class A Short Season levels from 1978 to 1982. He then became a scout, based in [Florida](/source/Florida) and covering Latin America for the Mets, [Chicago Cubs](/source/Chicago_Cubs), [Milwaukee Brewers](/source/Milwaukee_Brewers) and [Chicago White Sox](/source/Chicago_White_Sox). In 1995, he was named supervisor of Latin American scouting by the [Boston Red Sox](/source/Boston_Red_Sox), but in his second year in that job, he was fatally injured in an automobile accident in [Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic](/source/Santo_Domingo,_Dominican_Republic), at the age of 49.[3]
