He began working in motion pictures as an illustrator at [Twentieth Century Fox](/source/Twentieth_Century_Fox), including illustration work on *[The King and I](/source/The_King_and_I_(1956_film))* and *[South Pacific](/source/South_Pacific_(1958_film))*.[2] He won the [Academy Award](/source/Academy_Awards) for [best art direction](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Production_Design) for *[Fantastic Voyage](/source/Fantastic_Voyage)* (1966), for which he created sets depicting the interior of the human body.
