The **Dahomeyan Unity Party** ([French](/source/French_language): *Parti Dahoméen de l'Unité*, PDU) was a [political party](/source/Political_party) in the [Republic of Dahomey](/source/Republic_of_Dahomey).

## History

The party was established on 13 November 1960[8] by the merger of the [Republican Party of Dahomey](/source/Republican_Party_of_Dahomey) (PRD) led by [Sourou-Migan Apithy](/source/Sourou-Migan_Apithy), the [Dahomeyan Democratic Rally](/source/Dahomeyan_Democratic_Rally) (RDD) led by [Hubert Maga](/source/Hubert_Maga) and the National Liberation Movement (MLN) led by [Jean Pliya](/source/Jean_Pliya) and [Albert Teveodjré](/source/Albert_Teveodjr%C3%A9).[9] The PRD and the RDD had previously merged in 1958 to form the [Dahomeyan Progressive Party](/source/Dahomeyan_Progressive_Party), but had split the following year. [Chabi Mama](/source/Chabi_Mama) became the new party's secretary general.[10]

Changes to the electoral system made by Maga allowed the PDU to win all 60 seats in the [Dahomeyan parliamentary election, 1960](/source/Dahomeyan_parliamentary_election%2C_1960). The following year, the main opposition party, the [Dahomeyan Democratic Union](/source/Dahomeyan_Democratic_Union), was banned and its leader [Justin Ahomadégbé-Tomêtin](/source/Justin_Ahomad%C3%A9gb%C3%A9-Tom%C3%AAtin) imprisoned.[11] As a result, the PDU became the sole legal party in the country.[12]

The party was dissolved on 13 November 1963[13] by [Christophe Soglo](/source/Christophe_Soglo) after [Hubert Maga](/source/Hubert_Maga) was overthrown in a [coup](/source/1963_Dahomeyan_coup_d'%C3%A9tat), and a new party, the [Dahomeyan Democratic Party](/source/Dahomeyan_Democratic_Party) was formed by Apithy and [Justin Ahomadégbé-Tomêtin](/source/Justin_Ahomad%C3%A9gb%C3%A9-Tom%C3%AAtin).[10]
