## History

A DMart store in the suburbs of [Udupi](/source/Udupi).

Incorporated in 2000 by [Radhakishan Damani](/source/Radhakishan_Damani), DMart opened its first store in [Powai](/source/Powai), [Mumbai](/source/Mumbai), in 2002.[6][7] In its early years, the company adopted [everyday low price](/source/Everyday_low_price) strategy[7] and pursued "slow expansion", growing to 29 stores across [Maharashtra](/source/Maharashtra) and [Gujarat](/source/Gujarat) in 2010. Unlike other Indian supermarkets which typically [leased](/source/Retail_leasing) 4,000 sq ft properties, DMart operated much larger stores, ranging up to 30,000 sq ft, most of which it owned.[8][9]

In 2013, DMart reported having 65 stores across Maharashtra and Gujarat, along with one store each in [Hyderabad](/source/Hyderabad) and [Bangalore](/source/Bangalore) as it began expanding to other states. At the time, DMart became the third largest retail company by revenue, after [Reliance Retail](/source/Reliance_Retail) and [Future Group](/source/Future_Group).[10]

In October 2016, DMart had 112 stores, having expanded to [Telangana](/source/Telangana), [Andhra Pradesh](/source/Andhra_Pradesh), [Karnataka](/source/Karnataka), [Madhya Pradesh](/source/Madhya_Pradesh) and [Chhattisgarh](/source/Chhattisgarh).[11][12] In December 2016, the company started its [e-commerce](/source/E-commerce) venture called DMart Ready, allowing users to order groceries and household products online.[13][14]

The company launched its [initial public offering](/source/Initial_public_offering) (IPO) in March 2017 and got listed on the [National Stock Exchange](/source/National_Stock_Exchange_of_India) and [Bombay Stock Exchange](/source/Bombay_Stock_Exchange). On its listing date 22 March 2017, it became the 65th most valuable Indian firm.[15] By 2018, it entered [Tamil Nadu](/source/Tamil_Nadu), [Rajasthan](/source/Rajasthan), [Punjab](/source/Punjab%2C_India), [Delhi NCR](/source/Delhi_NCR) and [Daman](/source/Daman_district%2C_India).[16]

In 2021, *[The Ken](/source/The_Ken)* noted that DMart's newer stores ranged between 50,000 and 60,000 sq ft, nearly twice the average size of its existing stores.[17] In 2022, DMart surpassed 300 stores, with three-fourths located in its [cluster](/source/Business_cluster)-states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.[18][16]. In Apr 2026,D-Mart touched 500 stores all over India.[19]
