**DLX6 antisense RNA 1** (DLX6-AS1) (**Evf-1** (Embryonic ventral forebrain-1)) is a developmentally-regulated [long non-coding RNA](/source/Long_non-coding_RNA). In [rats](/source/Rat), it is expressed in [neurons](/source/Neuron) in the subventricular zone of the developing [forebrain](/source/Forebrain). Its expression is linked to that of the [Shh](/source/Sonic_hedgehog) (sonic hedgehog) and [DLX](/source/DLX_gene_family) families of [genes](/source/Genes), which are important in ventral forebrain and [craniofacial](/source/Craniofacial) development.[1] An alternatively spliced form of DLX6-AS1, DLX6-AS2, forms a stable complex with the Dlx-2 protein. This complex activates transcription of Dlx-5 and Dlx-6.[2]

DLX6-AS2 regulates [gene expression](/source/Gene_expression) in a region of the brain which produces GABAergic [interneurons](/source/Interneurons) during development.[3] It is involved in the signaling pathway and works in conjunction with DLX [homeodomain proteins](/source/Homeodomain) to increase the effectiveness of the [Dlx5/6](/source/DLX_gene_family) enhancer element within neural [stem cells](/source/Stem_cell). The interneurons are found in the [hippocampus](/source/Hippocampus) of the adult brain, an area responsible for [learning](/source/Learning) and [memory](/source/Memory).[4]

GABAergic interneurons have been implicated in a number of [psychiatric disorders](/source/Psychiatric_disorders) including [autism](/source/Autism),[5] [schizophrenia](/source/Schizophrenia)[6] and [epilepsy](/source/Epilepsy);[7] as DLX6-AS2 controls the development of these neurons, it has been subject to studies regarding the causation of these disorders.[4]

DLX6-AS2 is the first known long non-coding RNA to be involved in [organogenesis](/source/Organogenesis).[8]
