The **Counter-Terrorist Directorate** ([Spanish](/source/Spanish_language): *Dirección contra el terrorismo*, known as **DIRCOTE**) is the counterterrorism branch of the [National Police of Peru](/source/National_Police_of_Peru) (PNP) that is responsible for Peru's tactical counterterrorism law enforcement.[2]

The [Special Intelligence Group](/source/Special_Intelligence_Group) (GEIN), a former unit of DIRCOTE, is known for having carried out the capture of the [Shining Path](/source/Shining_Path) leader [Abimael Guzmán](/source/Abimael_Guzm%C3%A1n) on September 12, 1992.[3] For this and other achievements, the group's former members were declared "Heroes of Democracy" by [Peru's Congress](/source/Congress_of_the_Republic_of_Peru) in 2017.[4]
