The **Dokshitzer–Gribov–Lipatov–Altarelli–Parisi** (**DGLAP**) **evolution equations** are equations in [quantum chromodynamics](/source/Quantum_chromodynamics) (QCD) describing the variation of [parton distribution functions](/source/Parton_distribution_function) with varying energy scales.[1] Experimentally observed scaling violation in [deep inelastic scattering](/source/Deep_inelastic_scattering) is important evidence for the correctness of the equations and of QCD in general.[1] The equations were first published in the western world by [Guido Altarelli](/source/Guido_Altarelli) and [Giorgio Parisi](/source/Giorgio_Parisi) in 1977, and so are still sometimes called the **Altarelli–Parisi equations**.[2] Only later did it become known that an equivalent formula had been published in Russia by [Yuri Dokshitzer](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Yuri_Dokshitzer&action=edit&redlink=1) [[de](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juri_Lwowitsch_Dokschizer)] in 1977,[3] and by [Vladimir Gribov](/source/Vladimir_Gribov) and [Lev Lipatov](/source/Lev_Lipatov) in 1972.[4]

The DGLAP QCD evolution equations are widely used in global determinations of [parton](/source/Parton_(particle_physics)) distributions, like those from the Coordinated Theoretical-Experimental Project ([CTEQ](/source/Parton_(particle_physics)#Parton_distribution_functions)) or [NNPDF](/source/NNPDF) collaborations.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]
