**John Richard Whitfield**[2] (born May 2, 1992), known [professionally](/source/Stage_name) as **D.C. Young Fly**, is an American comedian, host, singer, and actor. Commencing his acting career in 2014, he garnered prominence as a recurring cast member on the [improv comedy](/source/Improv_comedy) series *[Wild 'n Out](/source/Wild_'n_Out)* (2015-present). He appeared on *[DigitalLivesMatter](/source/DigitalLivesMatter)* (2016). Whitfield assumed the starring role of [Spooky](/source/Outlaw_Posse_(film)#Cast) in *[Outlaw Posse](/source/Outlaw_Posse_(film))*.[3]

## Early life

John Whitfield[4] was born and raised in [Atlanta](/source/Atlanta), Georgia, specifically within the city's [West Side locale](/source/Westside%2C_Atlanta).[5] His maternal parent was an educator at the middle school level.[6] He pursued his secondary education at [Benjamin E. Mays High School](/source/Benjamin_Elijah_Mays_High_School).[7][8]

## Career

### 2012–2017

Whitfield commenced his career in the [entertainment industry](/source/Entertainment) as a comedian and thespian.[9] In 2012, Whitfield hosted [Gotham Comedy Live](/source/Gotham_Comedy_Club) in New York City, with Jay Nog, Atheer Yacoub, and Fransisco Ramos in a special edition of the show.[10] In 2015, Whitfield became a recurring cast member on the MTV improv comedy series *[Wild 'n Out](/source/Wild_'n_Out)*, hosted by comedian [Nick Cannon](/source/Nick_Cannon).[11][12] Although this season debuted with a double bill on June 10, 2015, featuring [Kevin Hart](/source/Kevin_Hart) and [Rae Sremmurd](/source/Rae_Sremmurd), it concluded its initial run with [Shaquille O'Neal](/source/Shaquille_O'Neal) and [Migos](/source/Migos) on August 19, 2015.[13][14][15][16]

In 2015, D.C, along with his Wild n’ Out co-stars, [Karlous Miller](/source/Karlous_Miller) and Chico Bean, started their own podcast, called The *85 South Show*,[17] where they speak on various topics, interact with the audience, and freestyle on songs.[18][19] Whitfield made an appearance as [Latavious](/source/Scream_(TV_series)#Cast) in an episode of the television series *[Scream](/source/Scream_(TV_series))*.[20][21] In August 2016, he secured a leading role in [Terri J. Vaughn](/source/Terri_J._Vaughn)'s *[#DigitalLivesMatter](/source/DigitalLivesMatter)*.[22][23][24] That same year, he transitioned to the [silver screen](/source/Silver_screen), making his cinematic debut as [Eric](/source/Almost_Christmas_(film)#Cast) in the film *[Almost Christmas](/source/Almost_Christmas_(film))*.[25] This project afforded him the opportunity to share the screen with actors [Kimberly Elise](/source/Kimberly_Elise), [Danny Glover](/source/Danny_Glover), [Omar Epps](/source/Omar_Epps), and [Gabrielle Union](/source/Gabrielle_Union).[26] Whitfield made an appearance in *My Cousin's Ghetto Wedding*.[27]

In 2017, Whitfield appeared in several notable projects. He starred in the critically acclaimed miniseries *[The New Edition Story](/source/The_New_Edition_Story)* in January, which received generally positive reviews.[28][29] He subsequently appeared in [BET](/source/BET)'s *[The Quad](/source/The_Quad_(TV_series))* in February, playing the role of Young Rapper.[30] Whitfield made a guest appearance in *Dirty South House Arrest* the same month. In March, Whitfield served as an opening act for [Chris Brown](/source/Chris_Brown)'s *[Party Tour](/source/The_Party_Tour_(Chris_Brown))*.[31][32] Whitfield made appearances on the American television series *[Hip Hop Squares](/source/Hip_Hop_Squares)*[33] and *[Tales](/source/Tales_(2017_TV_series))*, portraying Lil Joe in the latter's June episode.[34] From 2017 to 2019, Whitfield became a main host for the revived *[TRL](/source/Total_Request_Live)* on [MTV](/source/MTV).[35][36]

### 2018–present

In 2018, Whitfield appeared in the American teen [comedy-drama](/source/Comedy_drama) TV series *[Grown-ish](/source/Grown-ish)*, a spin-off of the [ABC](/source/American_Broadcasting_Company) series *[Black-ish](/source/Black-ish)*. He played the role of Rafael in two episodes. It was announced he would star alongside [Lil Yachty](/source/Lil_Yachty) in *[How High 2](/source/How_High_2)*, premiering on MTV on April 20, 2019.[37] Whitfield filmed two movies: *She Ball* with [Nick Cannon](/source/Nick_Cannon)[38][39] and *I Got the Hook Up 2* with [Master P](/source/Master_P), released on July 12, 2019.[40]

In 2019, he co-hosted the [2019 BET Social Awards](/source/BET_Awards_2019) with [Jess Hilarious](/source/Jess_Hilarious).[41] Whitfield joined [Eric Bellinger](/source/Eric_Bellinger)'s *[Cuffing Season Tour](/source/Eric_Bellinger#Discography)* as an opening act in December. In 2020, Whitfield became a judge on the internet game show *Floored*.[42] Whitfield hosted the [2020 BET Hip-Hop Awards](/source/2020_BET_Hip_Hop_Awards) alongside [Chico Bean](/source/Wild_'n_Out#Cast) and [Karlous Miller](/source/Karlous_Miller) in October.[43]

In 2021, Whitfield appeared in films *[For the Love of Money](/source/For_the_Love_of_Money_(2021_film))*,[44][45] *[Envy: Seven Deadly Sins](/source/Seven_Deadly_Sins_(film_series))*,[46][47] *Miracles Across 125th Street*,[48] and in the [Starz](/source/Starz) TV show *[BMF](/source/BMF_(TV_series))*.[49][50] In 2022, Whitfield starred in the 2023 remake of *[House Party](/source/House_Party_(2023_film))*, released on January 13, 2023.[51][52] In 2023, Whitfield was announced as the host of *[Celebrity Squares](/source/Celebrity_Squares)*, a revival of *[Hollywood Squares](/source/Hollywood_Squares)* on VH1 (later moved to BET).[53][54]

Whitfield portrayed the character [Rooster](/source/Bosco_(film)#Cast) in the cinematic production *[Bosco](/source/Bosco_(film))*, which debuted on 2 February 2024.[55] Whitfield assumed the role of [Spooky](/source/Outlaw_Posse_(film)#Cast) in the [Quiver Distribution](/source/Quiver_Distribution) film *[Outlaw Posse](/source/Outlaw_Posse_(film))*, released on 1 March 2024.[56][57]

## Personal life

Whitfield was in a relationship with Jacklyn Smith (known professionally as Ms. Jacky Oh), a former [Wild 'n Out](/source/Wild_'n_Out) girl, with whom he had three children. Smith died on May 31, 2023[58] from complications following a surgery.[59]
