'''D*Note''' is a British [electronic dance music](/source/electronic_dance_music) [band](/source/musical_ensemble), founded primarily in London in 1993 by musician Matt Winn (aka Matt Wienevski, born 20 September 1965). The band emerged with their debut album ''Babel'', which reflected an [acid jazz](/source/acid_jazz) background.<ref name="LarkinDM">{{cite book|title=[The Virgin Encyclopedia of Dance Music](/source/Encyclopedia_of_Popular_Music)|editor=Colin Larkin|editor-link=Colin Larkin (writer)|publisher=[Virgin Books](/source/Virgin_Books)|date=1998|edition=First|isbn=0-7535-0252-6|page=69}}</ref>

Alongside Wienevski, D*Note consists of musical friends, including keyboard player Matt Cooper who records with Outside and [Incognito](/source/Incognito_(band)), guitarist Keith Osbourne and others. Vocalists have included [Beth Hirsch](/source/Beth_Hirsch), Pamela Anderson, Ceri Evans of [Sunship](/source/Sunship), Dee Major and more. Other collaborators include scratching from Charlie Lexton as Cool Breeze, rappers Navigator and Krazy Cool D-Zine.

==History==
The first D*Note album, [''Babel''](/source/Babel_(D*Note_album)), was released in 1993. The second D*Note album, ''Criminal Justice'' (1995), was released on Dorado Records in the UK and on TVT records in America.<ref name="LarkinDM"/> Its most well-known track, "The Garden of Earthly Delights", featured the vocals of PY Anderson. Like "D*Votion", the track is an example of [ambient music](/source/ambient_music).{{Citation needed|date=May 2011}}

''Criminal Justice'' (1995) featured drum and bass rhythms with jazz harmonies, particularly in "Iniquity Worker" and "Criminal Justice", which was remixed by [Roni Size](/source/Roni_Size) and [A Guy Called Gerald](/source/A_Guy_Called_Gerald).

After two albums on Dorado, the band released the eponymous ''D*Note'' album on [Virgin](/source/Virgin_Records) dance imprint VC (Virgin Club). Featured tracks included "Lost and Found" and "Waiting Hopefully". The soundtrack to the short [film](/source/film), ''Coming Down'', was released in the same year.

''Fuchsia Dog'', the fifth D*Note album, was released on Channel 4 Records in 2001, along with another film, ''Out Of The Game'', for which it was the soundtrack. "Shed My Skin", a co-composition with [Anita Kelsey](/source/Anita_Kelsey) and featuring her vocals, appeared on over a hundred [compilation album](/source/compilation_album)s.{{Citation needed|date=May 2011}}

The sixth D*Note album, ''Laguna'', featuring [Beth Hirsch](/source/Beth_Hirsch), was released in 2006 on New World Music. Laguna featured [cover version](/source/cover_version)s of songs that figured as key parts of Winn and Hirsch’s musical influences, including "[Wichita Lineman](/source/Wichita_Lineman)" by [Jimmy Webb](/source/Jimmy_Webb), "[Guinnevere](/source/Guinnevere)" by [David Crosby](/source/David_Crosby), "Edith and The Kingpin" by [Joni Mitchell](/source/Joni_Mitchell), and "[Being Alive](/source/Being_Alive)" by [Stephen Sondheim](/source/Stephen_Sondheim).

==Influences==
Though part of the acid jazz scene of the early 1990s, D*Note was influenced by twentieth century French and English classical music and modal jazz. Influences from the jazz world include [Miles Davis](/source/Miles_Davis), [Bill Evans](/source/Bill_Evans), and [Keith Jarrett](/source/Keith_Jarrett). Classical influences include [Maurice Ravel](/source/Maurice_Ravel), whose polytonalities can be heard in D*Note's use of [Lydian](/source/Acoustic_scale) modes (what are known in the jazz world as “sharp elevens”). Other classical influences are [Debussy](/source/Claude_Debussy), [Vaughan Williams](/source/Ralph_Vaughan_Williams), and [Aaron Copland](/source/Aaron_Copland). Another key influence, who can be heard on "D*Votion" and "Deep Water" on the second album ''Criminal Justice'', is the American minimalist composer [Steve Reich](/source/Steve_Reich). D*Note contributed the "Phased and Konfused" remix to the Steve Reich composition "[Piano Phase](/source/Piano_Phase)", featured on the 1999 ''[Reich Remixed](/source/Reich_Remixed)'' album.{{Citation needed|date=May 2011}}
