# Cystotheca wrightii

***Cystotheca*** ***wrightii*** is a species of [powdery mildew](/source/Powdery_mildew) in the family [Erysiphaceae](/source/Erysiphaceae). It is found in [Asia](/source/Asia) on species of [*Quercus* subg. *Cerris*](/source/Quercus_subg._Cerris) sect. *Cyclobalanopsis*.[1]

## Description

The fungus likely forms dense distorting patches on the leaves of its [host](/source/Host_(biology)), with brown mycelium on the leaf undersides. *Cystotheca* *wrightii*, like most Erysiphaceae, is highly host-specific and only infects species in the genus *[Quercus](/source/Oak)*. All currently available sequences of *C. wrightii* (from [China](/source/China), [Japan](/source/Japan), and [Korea](/source/Korea)) have been retrieved from *[Q. glauca](/source/Quercus_glauca)* as host.[1]

## Taxonomy

The fungus was [formally described](/source/Species_description) in 1858 by Berkeley and M.A. Curtis. *C. wrightii* is the [type species](/source/Type_species) for the genus *[Cystotheca](/source/Cystotheca)*. As well as [*Quercus* subg. *Cerris*](/source/Quercus_subg._Cerris) sect. *Cyclobalanopsis*, *C. wrightii* has also been reported from [*Quercus* subg. *Quercus*](/source/Quercus_subg._Quercus) sect. *Quercus*,[2] and *[Castanopsis](/source/Castanopsis)*,[3] although both records are doubtful.[1]
