==Description==
The [rhizomatous](/source/rhizome) glaucous perennial sedge typically grows to a height of {{convert|0.6|to|1.2|m|ft|1}} and has a tufted habit. The plant blooms between January and August producing brown flowers.<ref name=FloraBase/> The [culms](/source/Culm_(botany)) are obtusely trigonous and densely papillose. The leaves are long and flat on top while folded at the base and around {{convert|2|to|13|mm|in|2}} in width. The compound [inflorescence](/source/inflorescence)s have between six and twelve primary rays which are up to 8&nbsp;cm {{convert|8|cm|in|1}} in length.<ref name="RFK"/>/>

The species was first formally described by the [botanist](/source/botanist) [Martinus Houttuyn](/source/Martinus_Houttuyn) in 1782 in the work ''Natuurlijke Histoire of Uitvoerige Beschryving der Dieren, Planten en Mineraalen''. Several synonyms have been described including: ''Cyperus pennatus'' [Lam.](/source/Jean-Baptiste_Lamarck) in 1791, ''Cyperus canescens''  [Vahl](/source/Martin_Vahl) in 1805, ''Cyperus javanicus'' subsp. ''armstrongii'' Dunlop in 1987, ''Mariscus pennatus'' (Lam.) ==Distribution==

It is also native to the islands north of Australia including [Papua New Guinea](/source/Papua_New_Guinea), [Timor](/source/Timor) and [Indonesia](/source/Indonesia).<ref name=at/>

The species has also been introduced into [Hawaii](/source/Hawaii) and islands in the [Pacific](/source/Pacific_Ocean) basin.<ref name=usda/>
