**Cypaera** or **Kypaira** (Ancient Greek: Κύπαιρα)[1] or **Cyphara** or **Cyphaera**[2] (Κύφαιρα) was a town and [polis](/source/Polis) (city-state)[3] of [Ancient Thessaly](/source/Ancient_Thessaly), in the southern part of the district [Thessaliotis](/source/Thessaliotis) or [Phthiotis](/source/Achaea_Phthiotis), near the confines of [Dolopia](/source/Dolopia). [Livy](/source/Livy) relates that the retreat of [Philip V of Macedon](/source/Philip_V_of_Macedon) after the [Battle of the Aous (198 BC)](/source/Battle_of_the_Aous_(198_BC)) allowed the [Aetolians](/source/Aetolians) to occupy much of Thessaly, and these latter, after sacking [Xyniae](/source/Xyniae) took Cypaera.[2] It has been located at a site called *Palaia Yannitsou* within the territory between the modern villages of [Kaitsa](/source/Kaitsa) (Λουτρά Καΐτσης) and [Makrirrachi](/source/Makrirrachi) (Μακρυρράχη), in the municipal unit of [Xyniada](/source/Xyniada).[4]
