***Cyclographina*** is a [genus](/source/Genus) of [lichen](/source/Lichen)-forming [fungi](/source/Fungi) in the family [Graphidaceae](/source/Graphidaceae). It has eight species.[1]

## Taxonomy

The genus was [circumscribed](/source/Circumscription_(taxonomy)) in 1979 by Indian lichenologist [Dharani Dhar Awasthi](/source/Dharani_Dhar_Awasthi), with *[Cyclographina pruinosa](/source/Cyclographina_pruinosa)* assigned as the [type species](/source/Type_species). While conducting research on the genus *[Helminthocarpon](/source/Helminthocarpon)* (in the order [Arthoniales](/source/Arthoniales)), Awasthi and Santosh Joshi and his colleagues observed that several species did not exhibit the typical branched, interwoven that are characteristic of this genus. Instead, these species were found to have paraphyses of this type limited to the upper portion of the [hymenium](/source/Hymenium), resembling a [morphological](/source/Morphology_(biology)) feature seen in the genus *[Catarraphia](/source/Catarraphia)*. This specific feature was initially documented in the lichen *[Helminthocarpon pruinosa](/source/Helminthocarpon_pruinosa)* by [Zahlbruckner](/source/Alexander_Zahlbruckner). As a result of these findings, the *Helminthocarpon* species that possessed ascospores were reclassified into the newly established genus *Cyclographina*.[2]

[Bettina Staiger](/source/Bettina_Staiger) and colleagues later noted that *Cyclographina* as originally circumscribed comprised only a few species, all transferred from *Helminthocarpon*. They also argued that the circumscription did not account for additional *[Graphina](/source/Graphina)* species with similar ("*Cyclographina*-like") features, and that older, potentially [synonymous](/source/Synonym_(taxonomy)) generic names (such as *Solenographa*) had not been evaluated.[3]
