# Cummings Valley

**Cummings Valley** is in [California's](/source/California) [Tehachapi Mountains](/source/Tehachapi_Mountains).

Cummings Valley was settled by the [Kawaiisu](/source/Kawaiisu) people before the arrival of [white Americans](/source/White_Americans), largely of [Irish origin](/source/Irish_people)[1][note 1], in the 1850s.[2] The region's agriculture began with [livestock](/source/Livestock) and [dry farming](/source/Dry_farming) as water was not imported until 1973.[2] This water consists of 20,000 acre-feet of water annually from the [State Water Project](/source/State_Water_Project) pumped 3,425 vertical feet from the [Grapevine](/source/Grapevine,_California) area.[3] These imports, including their use to [recharge](/source/Groundwater_recharge) the natural [water basin](/source/Groundwater) have been impacted by the ongoing [climate-change](/source/Climate_change)-caused [megadrought](/source/Southwestern_North_American_megadrought).[4]

Agriculture remains a large part of the Cummings Valley economy, including [greenhouses](/source/Greenhouse) and [vineyards](/source/Vineyard).[5]

[Stallion Springs](/source/Stallion_Springs,_California) and the [California Correctional Institution](/source/California_Correctional_Institution) are both located in Cummings Valley.

The dominant geographical feature in Cummings Valley is [Cummings Mountain](/source/Cummings_Mountain_(California)) to the southeast.[6] Many portions of the valley retain their [valley oak](/source/Valley_oak)-dominated, natural [savannah](/source/Savannah) state.[7] Other [oaks](/source/Oak) in Cummings Valley include [black oaks](/source/Quercus_kelloggii).[8]
