Cull-peppers Dish.

**Cull-Peppers Dish** ([grid reference](/source/Ordnance_Survey_National_Grid) [SY814926](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Cull-Peppers_Dish&params=50.732714_N_2.264917_W_region:GB_scale:25000)) is a 0.9-hectare (2.2-acre) [sinkhole](/source/Sinkhole) and [geological Site of Special Scientific Interest](/source/Geological_Site_of_Special_Scientific_Interest) in [Dorset](/source/Dorset), [notified](/source/SSSI_notification) in 1989.[1]

The name of the site and that of the nearby Culpeper's Spoon were possibly named after the herbalist [Nicholas Culpeper](/source/Nicholas_Culpeper).[2] Locally legends attribute the pits to the devil[3] and another pit near by is named *Devil* *'s* or *Hell* *'s* *Pit.*[2]

The site is used in [Thomas Hardy's](/source/Thomas_Hardy) novel *[The Return of the Native](/source/The_Return_of_the_Native)* as the place where Mrs Wildeve collects holly for a [wreath](/source/Wreath).[3]
