# Cuerden

**Cuerden** is a village and [civil parish](/source/Civil_parish) of the [Borough of Chorley](/source/Chorley_(borough)), in [Lancashire](/source/Lancashire), England. It is situated between [Bamber Bridge](/source/Bamber_Bridge) and [Leyland](/source/Leyland,_Lancashire), and had a population of 77 in 2001.[1] At the [2011 census](/source/2011_United_Kingdom_census) the population was included within [Clayton-le-Woods](/source/Clayton-le-Woods) civil parish. In the 2021 Census, the population was 183.[2]

## History

The name speculatively derives from the Welsh *cerdin*, the plural of *cerdinen*, "[rowan](/source/Rowan)", although the nearby Cuerdale derives from an Anglo-Saxon personal name. It could also be a derivation of 'coeur de lion' or Lionheart. The manor was given to Vivian Molyneux by [Roger de Poitou](/source/Roger_de_Poitou) and devolved to the Banastres, Charnocks, Langtons, and Fleetwoods.[3]

The manor house, [Cuerden Hall](/source/Cuerden_Hall), is a [country house](/source/Country_house) begun in the 1717 on the site of a 17th-century house, and extended between 1816 and 1819 by [Lewis Wyatt](/source/Lewis_Wyatt). During the [Industrial Revolution](/source/Industrial_Revolution), two [cotton mills](/source/Cotton_mills) were built by the river by William Clayton and William Eccles, and employed more than seven hundred people in 1848.[3]

[St Saviour's Church](/source/St_Saviour's_Church,_Cuerden) was built in 1836–37, to a design by the architect [Edmund Sharpe](/source/Edmund_Sharpe).

## Governance

Cuerden was a township in the ancient ecclesiastical parish of [Leyland](/source/Leyland,_Lancashire) and the [Leyland hundred](/source/Leyland_(hundred)).[3] It became part of the Chorley [Poor Law Union](/source/Poor_Law_Union), formed in 1837, which took responsibility for the administration and funding of the [Poor Law](/source/Poor_Law) and built a [workhouse](/source/Workhouse) in that area.[4]

## Geography

Cuerden covered 800 acres about 4½ miles south east of [Preston](/source/Preston,_Lancashire) on the [River Lostock](/source/River_Lostock) on the road between Preston and [Wigan](/source/Wigan).[3][5] Cuerden Valley Park, south of the [M6](/source/M6_motorway) and [M65](/source/M65_motorway) junction, covers 650 acres, half of which is used for agriculture. The park has a lake and was once the estate of [Cuerden Hall](/source/Cuerden_Hall).
