Many species in this genus used to reside in ''[Achaearanea](/source/Achaearanea)'',<ref name="World Spider Catalog"/> which received a major revision in 2008 by Hajime Yoshida.<ref name=yoshida/> The genus was originally established as a subgenus of ''[Theridion](/source/Theridion)''.<ref name="World Spider Catalog"/><ref name=yoshida/>

==Distribution==
This is mostly a [New World](/source/New_World) genus, with many species in [South America](/source/South_America). One species is cosmopolitan, one species occurs in the whole [Palearctic](/source/Palearctic), another only in [China](/source/China).<ref name="World Spider Catalog"/> ''[C. veruculata](/source/Cryptachaea_veruculata)'' was introduced to [Europe](/source/Europe) from [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand).

The genus name is a combination of ''Achaea'', the old name of the genus ''Achaearanea'', and [Ancient Greek](/source/Greek_language) κρυπτός "hidden". The genus is called ''Iwama-himegumo zoku'' in [Japanese](/source/Japanese_language).<ref name=yoshida/>
