'''Crypt Peak''' is an {{convert|8579|ft|m|0|adj=on}} mountain summit located in [Glacier National Park](/source/Glacier_National_Park_(US)), in [Glacier County](/source/Glacier_County%2C_Montana) of the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Montana](/source/Montana). It is situated along the [Canada–United States border](/source/Canada%E2%80%93United_States_border), above [Crypt Lake](/source/Crypt_Lake_Trail), and is partially within [Waterton Lakes National Park](/source/Waterton_Lakes_National_Park). Crypt Peak is part of the [Lewis Range](/source/Lewis_Range), and is approximately three miles east of [Waterton Lake](/source/Waterton_Lake). [Topographic relief](/source/Topographic_relief) is significant as Crypt Peak rises over {{convert|2,100|ft|m|abbr=off|sp=us}} above Crypt Lake in approximately one-half mile (1.6 km), and {{convert|4400|ft|m|-1|abbr=on}} above Waterton Lake in {{convert|3|mi|km|spell=in}}. Precipitation [runoff](/source/Surface_runoff) from the mountain drains west to Waterton Lake, and east to [Belly River](/source/Belly_River). This geographical feature's name has not yet been officially adopted by the [United States Board on Geographic Names](/source/United_States_Board_on_Geographic_Names).

==Climate==
Based on the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification), Crypt Peak is located in an alpine [subarctic climate](/source/subarctic_climate) zone characterized by long, usually very cold winters, and short, cool to mild summers.<ref name=Peel>{{cite journal | author = Peel, M. C. |author2=Finlayson, B. L. |author3=McMahon, T. A. | year = 2007 | title = Updated world map of the Köppen−Geiger climate classification | journal = Hydrol. Earth Syst. ==Geology==
Like the mountains in Glacier National Park, Crypt Peak is composed of [sedimentary rock](/source/sedimentary_rock) laid down during the [Precambrian](/source/Precambrian) to [Jurassic](/source/Jurassic) periods. Formed in shallow seas, this sedimentary rock was initially uplifted beginning 170 million years ago when the [Lewis Overthrust](/source/Lewis_Overthrust) fault pushed an enormous slab of [precambrian](/source/precambrian) rocks {{convert|3|mi|km|1|abbr=on}} thick, {{convert|50|mi|km}} wide and {{convert|160|mi|km}} long over younger rock of the [cretaceous](/source/cretaceous) period.<ref name=gadd>{{cite book|title=Geology of the Rocky Mountains and Columbias|author=Gadd, Ben |year=2008}}</ref> The reddish rock at the top of Crypt Peak is [argillite](/source/argillite).<ref>Andrew W. Nugara, 2014, ''More Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies'', 2nd Edition, page 82.</ref>
