"**Cry Softly**" is a song written by [Buddy Killen](/source/Buddy_Killen), [Billy Sherrill](/source/Billy_Sherrill), and [Glenn Sutton](/source/Glenn_Sutton).[1] It is based on *[Liebesträume](/source/Liebestr%C3%A4ume)* by [Franz Liszt](/source/Franz_Liszt). [Nancy Ames](/source/Nancy_Ames) originally recorded the song in [1966](/source/1966_in_music). Her version reached No. 95 on the [*Billboard* Hot 100](/source/Billboard_Hot_100).[2]

## Cover versions

[Andy Williams](/source/Andy_Williams) included a version on his 1974 album *[You Lay So Easy on My Mind](/source/You_Lay_So_Easy_on_My_Mind)*. The song reached #20 on the [adult contemporary chart](/source/Adult_Contemporary_(chart)) in 1975.[3]
