# Cross-wall

A **cross-wall** is an interior dividing [wall](/source/Wall) of a [castle](/source/Castle). It may be an external wall dividing, for example, the [inner](/source/Inner_ward) and [outer wards](/source/Outer_ward), or it may be a wall internal to a building such as the [keep](/source/Keep).[1]

An example of the external variety is the great cross-wall separating the inner and outer baileys of [Conwy Castle](/source/Conwy_Castle) in [Wales](/source/Wales). At [Rochester Castle](/source/Rochester_Castle) in [Kent](/source/Kent), the cross-wall within the keep was used for protection when the castle was attacked in 1215.[1]
