A '''crew car''' (also known as a '''relay van''') is a [passenger carriage](/source/Passenger_car_(rail)) specially fitted out for the use of train drivers. Interior fittings include a sleeping compartment for each crew member, a lounge area, a kitchen, a bathroom, and laundry. They are usually provided with an onboard generator system and air conditioning. The practice is also known as ''Relay Working''.
==Background==
They are used mainly on long-distance Intermodal [freight trains in Australia](/source/Rail_transport_in_Australia) and grain trains that travel with two crews who alternate crewing the train on duty / off duty during the journey. The car is usually marshalled directly or a few carriages behind the locomotives. Most crew cars have been converted from older SAR, VR and NSWGR passenger cars or depowered [SAR Bluebird Railcars](/source/South_Australian_Railways_Bluebird_railcar).<ref>{{cite web| title = General Code of Operating Rules: Section 5.12: Protection of Occupied Outfit Cars| url = http://www.railroadcontrols.com/gcor/signals.html| access-date = 2008-06-19| url-status = live| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20021228030809/http://www.railroadcontrols.com/gcor/signals.html| archive-date = 2002-12-28}}</ref>

Major Australian users of crew cars include [One Rail Australia](/source/One_Rail_Australia), [Aurizon](/source/Aurizon), [Pacific National](/source/Pacific_National), and [SCT Logistics](/source/SCT_Logistics), predominantly found on routes between [Adelaide](/source/Adelaide), [Darwin](/source/Darwin%2C_Northern_Territory) and [Perth](/source/Perth). In 2023, [Aurizon](/source/Aurizon) commenced relay work in Victoria on Intermodal services to Perth using Adelaide based drivers.
