A '''crew''' is a body or a group of people who work at a common activity, generally in a structured or [hierarchical](/source/hierarchy) organization. A location in which a crew works is called a '''crewyard''' or a '''workyard'''.<ref>{{Cite book|title=Essentials of Management|lang=en|last=Dubrin|first=Andrew J.|publisher=South-Western publishing, Co.|year=2006|isbn=9780324321104|location=Nashville, TN}}</ref> The word has nautical resonances: the tasks involved in operating a ship, particularly a sailing ship, providing numerous specialities within a ship's crew, often organised with a [chain of command](/source/chain_of_command). Traditional nautical usage strongly distinguishes [officer](/source/Commissioned_officer)s from crew, though the two groups combined form the [ship's company](/source/ship's_company). Members of a crew are often referred to by the titles ''crewmate'', ''[crewman](/source/crewman)'' or ''crew-member.''

The concept of a crew extends beyond maritime contexts to include teams in aviation, film production, emergency services, and space exploration. In aviation, for instance, flight crews consist of pilots, flight engineers, and cabin attendants working in coordinated roles to ensure passenger safety.<ref>{{Citation |title=Practice for Application of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Federal Aviation Regulations Part 21 Requirements to Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) |url=https://doi.org/10.1520/f2505-06 |access-date=2025-07-26 |publisher=ASTM International |doi=10.1520/f2505-06 |url-access=subscription }}</ref> Film crews are hierarchically organized into departments like camera, lighting, and sound, each with specialized roles contributing to production.<ref>{{Cite book |last=Brown |first=Blain |url=https://doi.org/10.4324/9780429353239 |title=Cinematography |date=2021-08-09 |publisher=Routledge |isbn=978-0-429-35323-9 |location=London |doi=10.4324/9780429353239 }}</ref> Similarly, firefighting crews operate with clear command structures during emergencies.<ref>{{Citation |title=National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1600, 2007, and 2010 |date=2013 |encyclopedia=Encyclopedia of Crisis Management |url=https://doi.org/10.4135/9781452275956.n220 |access-date=2025-07-26 |place=2455 Teller Road, Thousand Oaks California 91320 United States |publisher=SAGE Publications, Inc. |doi=10.4135/9781452275956.n220 |isbn=978-1-4522-2612-5|url-access=subscription }}</ref> Even in space missions, NASA designates astronauts as either command crew or mission specialists, demonstrating how crew structures adapt to different professional environments while maintaining core principles of organized teamwork and division of labor.<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Razenkova |first1=Elena |last2=Radeloff |first2=Volker C. |last3=Dubinin |first3=Maxim |last4=Bragina |first4=Eugenia V. |last5=Allen |first5=Andrew M. |last6=Clayton |first6=Murray K. |last7=Pidgeon |first7=Anna M. |last8=Baskin |first8=Leonid M. |last9=Coops |first9=Nicholas C. |last10=Hobi |first10=Martina L. |date=2020-01-21 |title=Vegetation productivity summarized by the Dynamic Habitat Indices explains broad-scale patterns of moose abundance across Russia |url=https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-019-57308-8 |journal=Scientific Reports |volume=10 |issue=1 |article-number=836 |doi=10.1038/s41598-019-57308-8 |pmid=31964926 |issn=2045-2322|pmc=6972780 |bibcode=2020NatSR..10..836R }}</ref>
